We need your help now!! Now is the time to act!!!
We need you to call and email (or write) Bishop Daniel Reilly, if possible today! (contact
info below & copy me)
We need you to call and/or email Fr. McFarland. (contact info below & copy me)
We need you to simply reply to me with this email saying that you are with us on this
issue.
Why?
Not only is it wrong for "Catholic" Holy Cross to be honoring Pro-Abortion Chris
Matthews on May 23rd, it has completely ignored with silence the multiple pleadings of
one of the top supporters of the college. See more detail below.
I wrote to some of you on April 10th about Holy Cross' Matthew's announcement, Charlie
Millard's four unanswered letters to the Trustees, and his Press Release.
Since then much has happened and this is turning into a Major News Event for Holy
Cross, its Alumni, and the Holy Cross Cardinal Newman Society!
See the New Section on our website entitled:
Top Crusader & HC Benefactor Ignored by College re Pro Abortion/Matthews
Graduation Speaker!
It already has 14 documents and many more to come!
See the articles that have already been printed in the Catholic Free Press,
Worcester Telegram and the Boston Sunday Globe!
The President of the national Cardinal Newman Society sent Fr. McFarland a scathing
letter. This letter and the ensuing responses are on the site and are dynamite!
Also, there are a few great sample letters that you wrote to Fr. McFarland. And in
answer to some of your questions there is a document with several quotes from Chris
Matthews on his "Pro-Choice" stance. If you don't already know that pro-choice IS proabortion, we've included a Summary of the recent Vatican Doctrinal Note On Some
Questions Regarding The Participation Of Catholics In Political Life. (The complete
document is also on our website in the Catholic Higher Ed, Ex corde Section.)
Finally, today Charlie Millard has placed a powerful half page Open Letter to President
McFarland and the Holy Cross Board of Trustees in the Catholic Free Press. It protests
his choice of Matthews, counters some of his outrageous statements, and even offers a
compromise solution. It includes theologian Fr.Richard John Neuhaus' objection to
McFarland's statement that Matthews' public position on abortion is "allowable in
Catholic thought." It also quotes a series of pro-abortion comments by Matthews.
Much more is planned, including protests on the Hill, in conjunction with central
Massachusetts Pro Life groups, if the college insists on going ahead. Local supporters
should plan on being there at 9:30 AM on Friday May 23! (Anyone may contact LALM Life Action League of Mass- at lprolife@aol.com.)
If you didn't study my previous email, here is a quick recap of WHY we are doing this:
First, Holy Cross and the Jesuits have specifically condemned abortion, the Jesuits just
recently in their formal Statement of March 25th. See Millard's first two letters that have
these two condemnations. As we know, abortion is against Catholic Church Teaching
and natural law. It is the ultimate abuse of children! It is therefore contradictory and
dissident for Holy Cross to honor a public figure like Matthews who has made his
position of being "Pro-Choice" clear. See the referenced documents for more
information.
Second, few alumni have done as much for Holy Cross as Charles Millard '54. He was a
Trustee for over 20 years, Chairman of the Trustees for 5 years, past Honorary Degree
recipient, major benefactor & supporter of the College, sent his eight children there, and
chosen for the In Hoc Signo Award at this upcoming reunion! See his third letter with
his biographical summary.
Out of his respect for the college he has, up until now, been a quiet supporter of the Holy
Cross Cardinal Newman Society. He has supported us because of his concern over
recent events at the college undermining its "Catholic identity".
Finally, Holy Cross completely ignored Mr.. Millard's four protest letters with silence!
What an insult! This is the Holy Cross that prides itself on its openness, diversity and
fairness! It was after this that he reluctantly went public. Any serious Holy Cross
Alumnus now has an excellent example of someone who loves the College but also has
the courage of his Catholic convictions to publicly criticize it! Let's follow this example
and spread the word!
In closing, please contact the Bishop and Fr. McFarland, and copy me on any
emails or letters! The Bishop is scheduled to be at a Pro Life March tomorrow
morning and I hope to meet him there. So this is very timely, and if you can
contact him today that would be great. Also, note that he did decide a few years
ago NOT to attend commencement at Assumption College because it was
honoring the previous Lt. Governor, Jane Swift, a "pro-choicer". Finally, PLEASE
ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR AGREEMENT WITH us on this by simply REPLYING
TO ME BY RETURN EMAIL.
