Application for Graduate Faculty Status as a Supervisor in a McMaster University, Faculty of Health Sciences Affiliated Graduate
Program
The following document contains the application form for individuals that are applying for, or have, Faculty
positions (within the Faculty of Health Sciences) and wish to be approved for Graduate Program participation that
includes Master’s and/or PhD Supervisory Privileges (including Supervisory Committee roles) in Health Sciences
Affiliated Graduate Programs. This form is not to be used for applications from Emeritus Professors. Please note: the
application should be prepared with the knowledge that McMaster University policies require an assessment of the
suitability of potential graduate program supervisors for many of the following “suggested” qualities:
1) a programme of research, as shown by research grants or contracts
2) a regular flow of peer-reviewed publications, consistent with expectations in the discipline
3) experience with the supervision of graduate research papers or masters theses
4) experience with designing and teaching a graduate course
5) membership on Ph.D. supervisory committees, or involvement with graduate supervision as a secondary
supervisor
Additionally, applicants will be assessed for other qualifications, including their:
1) Advanced academic qualification(s) (e.g. Master’s or Doctoral degree; PhD or equivalent is normally
required for PhD supervision)
2) Demonstrated teaching experience, preferably at a graduate level
3) Demonstrated expertise and experience in the content area of teaching/mentorship
4) Demonstrated commitment to professional advancement as an educator/advisor
The application process steps are follows:
Step I: The applicant fills in Page 1of the application for electronic submission (with CV) to:
1. the Department Chair (or equivalent) of the faculty member’s primary department (e.g., Medicine,
Pathology & Molecular Medicine, etc.) or in the case of Joint Appointment, both Department Chairs
2. the Academic Head (Assistant Dean/Associate Chair/Program Director) of the relevant Graduate Program
Step II: The Graduate Program Head (e.g. Assistant Dean or Program Director) and the applicant’s Department
Chair(s) review the submission and jointly decide if the application should go forward for further review by the
Associate Dean of Graduate Studies (Health Sciences) (submitted by email to: fhsgrad@mcmaster.ca). For
interdisciplinary programs, the signature of the Program Representative to the Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate
Policy and Curriculum Council (GPCC) is required if this is not the Program Director. When interviews are
required for faculty appointments, completed recommendations should be provided to the Associate Dean before the
interview.
Please note: Faculty with part-time appointments will normally only be considered for non-primary supervisory
roles on supervisory committees. A supplementary letter from the Assistant Dean/Program Head outlining how the
part-time faculty member will fulfill graduate program roles should be included with the application and, in cases
where direct supervisory privileges are requested, should include details as to how these responsibilities may be
fulfilled while holding a part-time appointment.
Faculty on Contractually Limited Appointments (CLA) are required to submit additional information (please see
page 3 for full details of requested information) and will normally only be considered for MSc supervisory roles,
with annual review of their graduate program commitments.
Step III: Upon receipt of the application, Program nomination letter and recommendation, the Associate Dean of
Graduate Studies, Health Sciences has the option to do one or more of the following:
1. Approve the application (with or without modification of the program recommendations)
2. If applicable, make a recommendation to the Associate Vice President (AVP) and Dean of the School of
Graduate Studies on interviewed applicants about their suitability for an academic appointment.
