Paraffin, Oleic Acid, Kaolin & Titanium Dioxide Flow Visualisation Mixture
The components of this mixture are volatile liquids or powders and are known
irritants of the respiratory tract, eyes and skin. Paraffin (kerosine) is also harmful by
these routes.
When mixing:
 Measures should be taken not to breathe the dust and vapours or to expose
others to the dust and vapours. You should protect your eyes and skin from them
too.
 Prepare the area for mixing so that the effects of a spillage can be minimised and
always clear up any spills immediately so that no dust or vapours can cause
harm later.
 Consider using local exhaust ventilation
When using:
 Apply the mixture with due care and protect against spillage.
 The powders will not be a hazard but ensure you do not breathe in the vapours
and do not work in a confined space with the mixture for long.
 Use a local exhaust ventilator if ventilation is not good.
After use:
 Clean down all equipment thoroughly.
Storing:
 Unused mixture and compounds must be stored in a fuels cupboard away from
strong oxidisers and aluminium.
Disposal:
 Unused mixture and compounds should be disposed of through the stores
disposal service in their containers.
 Materials used for clearing spills or products from tests should be bagged up and
disposed of through the stores as soon as possible.
