Carpentry activities – text version
1. Are you ready?
There is a short quiz to take before you start. You can access the text version of this quiz
in the section ‘Are you ready?’ on the page that you came from.
2. Tools of the trade
In the next few sections you will be asked to think about the dimensions of the pieces of
wood that could form a picture frame.
3. Start your apprenticeship
Suppose there was a picture that was in the shape of an equilateral triangle with sides of
length 60mm. How could you create three congruent trapeziums that could fit together
to form a frame for this picture, if the height of each trapezium was 10 mm? Answer by
giving the lengths of the parallel sides of the trapeziums.
4. Work experience
Suppose there was a picture that was in the shape of a regular pentagon with sides of
length 50mm. How could you create five congruent trapeziums that could fit together to
form a frame for this picture, if the height of each trapezium was 10 mm? Answer by
giving the lengths of the parallel sides of the trapeziums.
5. Ready to earn
Suppose there was a picture that was in the shape of a regular hexagon with sides of
length 50mm. How could you create six congruent trapeziums that could fit together to
form a frame for this picture, if the height of each trapezium was 10 mm? Answer by
giving the lengths of the parallel sides of the trapeziums.
6. Don’t knock off early!
Suppose there was a picture that was in the shape of an isosceles triangle with sides of
length 50mm, 50mm and 60mm. How could you create three trapeziums that could fit
together to form a frame for this picture, if the height of each trapezium was 10 mm?
Answer by giving the lengths of the parallel sides of the trapeziums.
Suppose there was a picture that was in the shape of a right-angled triangle in which the
shorter sides were of length 30mm and 35mm. How could you create three trapeziums
that could fit together to form a frame for this picture, if the height of each trapezium
was 10 mm? Answer by giving the lengths of the parallel sides of the trapeziums.
