I. The Method of Substitution


We now are going to solve two or more equations with the same
variables simultaneously. These are called systems of equations.
Solutions of systems of equations must be solutions of all
equations in the system.
Our first method of solving system of equations is the method
of substitution. This method involves solving one of the equations
for one of the variables, substituting for that variable in the other
equation, and solving this new equation.
Tip: You will need to repeatedly refer to back-substitute to find the
value of the other variable.
Example 1. Solve the following systems of equations.
 x + y =5

II. Applications
Break-even point: Revenue = Cost.
Example 3. A company has a fixed monthly manufacturing cost of
$12,000, and it costs $0.95 to produce each unit. They then sell each
unit for $1.25. How many units must be sold before this company
breaks even?
