Math Test Summary Grade: 5 Concepts: Multiplication & Different representations GLCES: N.FL.05.04 Multiply a multi-digit number by a two-digit number; (recognize and be able to explain common computational errors such as not accounting for place value.) N.FL.05.05 Solve applied problems involving multiplication and division of whole numbers. Estimation of time: I believe that the test will take students 40-50 minutes. It took me around 20 minutes to complete. I want the students to be able to take their time and thoroughly complete the test. Allowing enough time will ensure that the students have time to demonstrate all that they have learned. MODIFICATIONS: The test took the majority of my peers roughly thirty minutes. I made some adjustments to my test and removed some of the challenging areas. I took my new test and it took me around twenty minutes. I believe it would take students forty to forty-five minutes. ENTIRE TEST READABILITY: STUDENT DIRECTIONS READABILITY: MULTIPLICATION! Name: ________________________ Date: _______________ Number: _________ Estimated # of points earned: _____/40 Total # of points earned: ______/40 This test will show me what you have learned from our multiplication lessons. I am looking to see if you are able to build with manipulatives, draw, and explain statements. Use the supplies provided for building. You may use your calculators. Take your time and have fun! 1. Using the cups and animals method of multiplication how would you represent the following: (make sure to build first, write the solution, then draw, and explain what you have drawn) (4 points each) (8 points total) 5x8= 7x9= (8) 2. One day Jewel was preparing brownies for her class bake sale, she made five pans and cut each pan into twelve individual brownies. (5 points) Write the multiplication equation: (2 points) Draw a picture to represent Jewel’s brownies: (2 points) How many brownies did Jewel have for the bake sale? (1 point) 3. Write a math story with the expression 2 x 12 in it. The solution should be there as well. Be creative! (4 points) 4. Create a three-digit number and a two digit number multiplication equation and solve it. Please remember to write the equation correctly and show the steps you took to reach the solution. You may use your calculator. Be creative! (5 points) (14) 5. Use base ten blocks to build and draw: (11 points) Points will be assigned for each step in your drawing. Label your drawing, then show the process in the space provided on the side, and draw arrows from your drawing to the corresponding step in the solution. 14 x 22 22 X 14 ( ( ( ( x x x x ) ) ) ) Explain what your picture represents; (what did you draw?) include proper vocabulary and the steps you took to reach your solution: (4 points) What does 14 x 22 mean? (3 points) You are done! (18) Multiplication Math Test Lesson Ideas: I would introduce the unit of multiplication by finding out what the students have already done with multiplication. We would not focus on memorizing the facts; we would work with manipulatives to fully understand the multiplication process. I would introduce base ten blocks during one lesson, and we would work with the terminology (factors, product) to reach our solutions. Another lesson would include different representations of grouping or multiplying (such as the animals and cups method); the students could work with the manipulatives to show how multiplication is “making groups.” We would incorporate many word stories into our lessons so the students have practice working with them, solving them, drawing what they represent, and writing their own. Each lesson would take a lot of time because the students will need quite a bit of work with the building, drawing, and explaining concept. I would want my students to be familiar with this concept so they can transfer it to the other subjects and mathematical concepts they will have in fifth grade and beyond. The animals and cups lesson would be a good time to incorporate the Amazing Animals book. The beginning of the multiplication unit would be when I would use The Best of Times book, along with Multiplication Made Easy. Both of those books would lay the foundation for further lessons. I would like to introduce the whole multiplication unit with the “Multiplication Rock” recording, which would get my students interested in multiplication and excited to explore it further. Literature Connections: The Best of Times by Greg Tang (The book involves rhymes that will help children solve multiplication facts zero to ten without having to memorize the fact rules or multiplication tables) Amazing Animals: multiplying multi-digit numbers by one-digit numbers with regrouping by Orli Zuravicky (Provides a curriculum connection to science by talking about different animal facts, also provides ways to multiply to figure out information) Multiplication Made Easy by Rebecca Wingard-Nelson (A basic look at multiplication: the book explores terminology, facts, hints, word stories, and suggestions for further reading) 2x2= Boo! Spooky Multiplication Stories by Loreen Leedy (Funny math stories to introduce factors zero through five)
