College & University Admission Lingo (according to Valpo)
Admit:
A student who has applied and been admitted to a college or university.
AIA:
Ambassador in Admission; a team of students selectively interviewed, hired and trained to work
in Valparaiso University’s Admission Offices/Duesenberg Welcome Center.
ARC:
The Athletics–Recreation Center at Valparaiso University.
ASB:
The new Arts & Sciences Building located between Christ College and the Christopher Center.
ASD:
Admitted Student Day – a visit program for admitted students; includes an overnight stay with a
current student, conversations with a professor & admission counselor, observing a class.
Catalog:
Valpo no longer prints the catalog; it can be found online at valpo.edu/registrar/catalogs.php .
CC:
Christ College – The Honors College at Valparaiso University. Admission is highly selective.
CCLIR:
Pronounced “clear”. The Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources.
Deposit:
An admitted student who has sent in his or her enrollment deposit.
FAFSA:
Free Application for Federal Student Aid; students should complete this form each year to
determine any need-based financial aid. The priority consideration deadline is March 10,
however Indiana residents’ FAFSAs must be received by the federal processor by then.
FOCUS:
Valpo’s orientation program; new students must attend one of the options offered.
Lutheran College Fairs:
A series of college fairs hosted by LECNA (Lutheran Education Council of North
America), most which Valpo attends with the help of VAN members.
NACAC:
National Association for College Admission Counseling, the professional governing body for
college admission counseling in high schools, colleges and universities.
OA:
Orientation Assistant; Valpo upperclassmen who lead the orientation groups during FOCUS. The
success of FOCUS depends heavily on these awesome Valpo representatives.
Profile:
A small, general information piece handed out at college fairs – also called a “travel-piece.”
Prospect/Inquiry:
A student who is in the college’s database, but has not yet applied for admission.
Reply Card:
Distributed at college fairs or high school visits to get students on the University’s mailing list.
VAN:
Valpo Admission Network – 1,000 alumni/parent volunteers for the Office of Admission.
Viewbook:
Larger brochure giving an overview and visual description of Valpo. Also called “hookbook.”
VOV:
Valpo Overnight Visit – for high school seniors (most Sunday through Thursday nights).
VUCA:
Pronounced “vooka”, Valparaiso University’s Center for the Arts.
VVD:
Valpo Visit Day, the Admission Office’s general campus visit program which is planned for two
Saturdays in the fall semester and one in the spring semester.
