Student Ambassador Job Description 2010-2011
Student Ambassador Positions
Student Ambassadors are part of the OMA/D Outreach & Recruitment team who provide educational
services to underrepresented and underserved communities*. Our staff strives to ensure that students
possess the knowledge and skills to be competitively eligible for higher education. We also prepare
students for successful college admission and build partnerships between the UW and the community.
Our overall mission is to increase the number of minority students in the in-state applicant pool through
programs of outreach and recruitment inspired by UW students and outreach staff.

Care, First-Generation to College, GLBTQ students)
On-Campus Outreach (90%)
Participate in the planning and development of outreach events/activities for target populations
 Organize, coordinate, and/or support efforts to implement established outreach programs (i.e.,
Native American Days, A.C.E., YGB, ESSENCE, PIONEER, UW Admit, etc.);
 Organize student volunteers for and participate on student panels and campus tours;
 Develop, schedule, and facilitate itinerary for campus visitations;
 Make presentations to inform parents, students, and campus and community organizations
concerning university life, academic demands, and the student perspective.
Off-Campus Outreach (10% of the job)
Outreach to High Schools in Seattle (King County) and Tacoma (Pierce County) Area
 Assist high school seniors with the admissions application process including the personal
statement, activities’ log, etc.;
 Assist high school seniors with the college application process;
 Develop avenues for interaction between high school students and UW students;
 Assist counselors in developing and executing outreach programs to potential UW students;
 Lead activities that involve ambassador core competencies such as organizing and serving on
student panels, speaking to groups about their student perspectives, giving campus tours, and
creating fun/interactive workshops;
 Support overall OMA/D outreach and recruitment program efforts as assigned.
Outreach to community organizations and programs that impact underrepresented students in Seattle
(King County) and Tacoma (Pierce County) Area (90% in summer, 10% other times)
 Provide services to underrepresented students consistent with your role with high school students;
 Represent the Office of Minority Affairs, University Outreach & Recruitment, and the Student
Ambassadors in a manner that provides a positive reflection of our institutional vision, goals,
mission, and efforts;
 Table at community events such as career and college fairs, UW departmental events, and student
panels at local middle and high schools,
 Establish positive relationships between community leaders, groups, & youth and University
students, staff, and faculty,
 Disseminate information regarding outreach programs, university life, and the application process.
Other expectations of all ambassadors
 Attendance at regularly scheduled meetings.
 Be in and remain in good academic standing (2.75 GPA) (NOTE: If your grades have been rising
steadily, but you don’t have a cumulative GPA of 2.75, you may still be considered. The selection
committee will review your application and unofficial transcript and make a decision on a case by
case basis.)
Minimum Requirements:
A cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
Good verbal communication skills, including excellent listening skills
Respect for diversity and a willingness to learn about other cultures
The ability to be a team player
A willingness to learn about this campus and give tours (accommodations can be made based on
ambulatory ability)
A good sense of humor

Pay Range:
$9.00/hour new Ambassadors
Hours: Flexible
$10/hour returning Ambassadors
To maintain your standing as a Student Ambassador, you must work at least 20 hours per quarter.
