Statement
The success of Lehigh University, like all universities,
depends upon Academic Freedom. The foremost
statement on academic freedom and tenure is that of
the American Association of University Professor’s
written in 1940. This policy on academic freedom for
the Faculty of Lehigh University freely borrows from
the AAUP statement, subsequent comments by the
AAUP, and Stanford University's Research Handbook.
Policy
Academic freedom is essential to the unfettered search
for truth and its free expression by all members of the
University Community. Lehigh's mission of teaching,
learning, research and scholarship depend upon an
atmosphere in which freedom of inquiry, thought,
expression, publication, and peaceable assembly are
given the fullest protection. Protection must be given
not only for ideas that are widely accepted but also for
those that shock or disturb. The widest range of
viewpoints should be encouraged, free from
institutional orthodoxy and from internal or external
coercion.
