The Comprehensive Language and Orientation Course has been exclusively
designed to fulfil the needs and expectations of exchange students who fall
into one or more of the following categories:
Students who have already completed one year (Basic Level II) of German
language instruction.
Students who would like to refresh their knowledge of German before the
semester starts. The course is not designed for students who have already
completed a German language course at intermediate level or who are
enrolled in a German Studies programme. Students of German studies in
their first or second year are welcome, too. If you are in doubt if you are
eligible, please contact us.
Students interested in familiarising themselves with the university campus,
the city of Erfurt and its surroundings before the semester starts.
Students who would like to know more about German culture and way of life;
German history, politics and the educational system.
In some cases we may ask you to turn in a language assessment of your
German skills by one of your German teachers.
Course design
The course takes place from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Three out of four hours per day focus on training basic language skills, and
one hour focuses on the discussion of general topics such as German culture,
history, politics, etc..
The course is designed to train students’ language skills (listening and reading
comprehension, writing, and oral expression). Additionally, a series of
exercises to review the basics of German grammar and to improve students’
vocabulary have been prepared.
You will receive a detailed programme after your arrival.
Arrival days

the course (mandatory attendance).
Upon your arrival, please report to the International Office first. (First floor of

the week at subsidised rates. On the weekends, the cafeteria is closed. All the
residence halls have cooking facilities.
Fees
The University of Erfurt does not charge exchange students and students in
the preparatory course tuition fees. Free movers will be charged 220 EUR for
participation in the prep course. As a student you are responsible for covering
your living costs (room & board, health insurance, books and transportation).
Students should expect costs and living expenses of about 670 EUR per
