YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PRACTITIONER SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
Montgomery College Spring Semester 2016
The Career Pathways for Youth Development Practitioners
The Montgomery County Council for Children, Youth and Families and the Howard and Geraldine
Polinger Family Foundation organized a group of program leaders to convene in 2011 to discuss
factors leading to high staff turnover in youth serving organizations. The need to develop a more
robust professional development system to address issues such as: supporting career growth,
stability within the industry, and professionalizing the field was quickly realized. In 2013, a formal
committee was solidified and is now known as The Career Pathways for Youth Development
Practitioners (CPYDP).
EDUC 160X, Introduction to Youth Development, at Montgomery College: Provides a background
in historical, philosophical and cultural perspectives on youth development and youth work. Topics
for this course include developing a professional awareness of youth work; identifying and
distinguishing between asset building models and deficit based models with a focus on positive
youth development; and an overview of youth work professional issues, with emphasis on ethics,
values, and professionalism.
This course begins on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Class will meet each Tuesday and Thursday from
12:30 to 1:45 pm until May 15. Located in classroom CS 103 at the Montgomery College Rockville
campus, the course will be taught by Dr. Robin Goldstein, along with several special guest speakers.
EDUC 250X - Principles and Best Practices in Youth Development: Introduces the essentials of
programming for youth development, including creation, delivery and evaluation of high-quality
out-of-school-time programs. Topics for this course include curriculum and program development,
needs assessments, working with families, funding and budgeting, and program evaluation.
This course begins on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Class will meet each Tuesday evening from 6:30
to 9:20 pm until May 15. Located in classroom CS 017 at the Montgomery College Rockville campus,
