Making Durham students aware of your vacancies is an obvious and vital part
of the recruitment process.
At Durham we will advertise your vacancies FREE OF CHARGE on our website and
ensure your organisation’s opportunities are available to all Durham students and
graduates.
Our vacancy pages are located at http://www.durham.ac.uk/careers-advice/vacancies
We have a dedicated Vacancies Co-ordinator to ensure your details are displayed
correctly and effectively, both electronically on the website and within our Information
Room Employer Folders.
We try to make it as easy as possible for you to send your vacancies to us so we accept
email attachments in Word or PDF format as well as paper based information. It does help
enormously if you use our Vacancy Proforma available for download on our website at
http://www.durham.ac.uk/careers-advice/employers/vacancy_info.htm
The Careers Advisory Service provides students with internet access to your web based
information and the facility for students to complete on-line applications.
There is also an integrated DVD and Video player for students to view any media you
produce and send to us in this format.

One of the best ways to raise your profile amongst Durham students is to
present your company to them on campus.
Events that aim to attract students to come and learn more about the vacancies and
career prospects offered by your organisation are always popular. These are usually held
in the Autumn term, well before the closing date for applications.
Autumn is a busy time for Graduate Recruiters and the busiest time of year for the Careers
Advisory Service. Many final year students return to Durham with the goal of graduate
employment on their mind.
At Durham, we strive to maximise your potential audience by planning and organising the
events programme effectively:


No more than three presentations on a single evening
Avoiding clashes with similar employers or competitors on the same evening
We will also publicise your event FREE OF CHARGE in the following ways:

A listing on the student event diary which features electronic sign-up. Students
automatically receive confirmation of this and an event reminder is sent via email to
them two days prior to the event.

Distribution of your posters to Colleges – please send us 25 copies (or 50 if you
wish to cover Departments and public areas as well) to reach us at least 2 weeks
before your presentation (A4 only please).
Other effective publicity methods such as direct mailing and messaging attract a charge
and are covered elsewhere in this information pack.

Recruitment and information fairs remain a key way of letting students know
about your company and the opportunities on offer.
At Durham, we offer a number of Fairs and special events that enable your company to
meet a complete cross section of Durham Students.
Employer Information Fair
(two consecutive days in mid
October)
The Durham Law Fair
(mid to late November)*
Graduate Opportunities Fair
(June)
This is an annual event
enabling employers to meet a
wide range of students and talk
to them informally about
aspirations,
interests
and
opportunities. The Information
fair is a great opportunity to
make personal contact with a
large number of interested,
high quality students. It is by
far the most cost-effective way
to meet potential recruits.
Durham has an internationally
rated Law department as well
as having a large number of
non-law students interested in
a Law career. This event in
November, lets Law firms
target those students and
makes them aware of your
vacation
placements
and
training contracts.
Whilst more recruiters are
moving
to
year
round
recruitment
processes,
Summer fairs are still popular
with employers and students
alike as a means of filling
vacancies for the current year,
but also as more students put
off career decisions until after
graduation,
they
are
an
excellent way to kick-start the
coming recruitment year.
