FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM
Call for application for the academic year 2009/2010
External deadline: 31 May 2009
Internal deadline: 22 May 2009
BACKGROUND
The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program sends scholars and professionals from
South Africa to lecture at U.S. colleges and universities that do not often have the
opportunity to host visiting scholars (small liberal arts colleges, regional undergraduate
universities, community colleges, and historically black or Hispanic colleges and
universities). Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia seeks to host a
Scholar-in-Residence from South Africa during the U.S. 2009 academic year (August 2009
to May 2010).
ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC STATE UNIVERSITY, GEORGIA, USA
With the help of the International Department, the Armstrong Atlantic State University
(AASU) is trying to fulfill its mission to integrate global knowledge, skills and attitudes into
the curriculum. Currently, they offer study abroad programmes throughout different
continents such as South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The University is interested in
bringing a scholar from South Africa, to teach a course for each semester on African History
with a focus on South African history, culture and society. This will serve as a good
introduction to undergraduate students on ‘Historical and Contemporary Aspects of South
Africa.’ The anticipated enrollment for this class is 35-40 students per each semester.
Another special part of the activities planned for the scholar is a faculty development
seminar, which will introduce the faculty to the challenges that the African people
experienced after the apartheid era ended.
The School of Education has a number of activities planned for the scholar to lecture in the
diversity, social studies and geography education courses. Augusta State University, East
Georgia College, Georgia Southern University are a few of the Universities located in the
region that are interested in hosting the scholar while he or she is in the SIR programme.
This is an excellent opportunity to create a strong network of professionals that might be
used in the future when the scholar goes back home.
AASU was founded in 1935 to enhance higher educational opportunities in the community.
It has since grown into a comprehensive liberal arts institution, serving students from
diverse origins and offering more than 75 undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificates,
and pre-professional programs in the areas of arts, sciences, humanities, social sciences,
education, health professions, and information technology. The university today serves a
student body of nearly 7, 000, out of which 270 are international students representing 70
countries worldwide. By hosting an SIR, it seeks to strengthen its mission to promote an
international perspective in order to prepare its students to be citizens engaged in a multiethnic and global society.
