Position Summary
As part of the United States – Egypt Higher Education Initiative, The Local Scholarship Program (LSP) is a
USAID-funded program that offers comprehensive undergraduate scholarships to talented and deserving
Egyptian youth to attend private universities in Egypt. Through degree programs in a range of in-demand fields
of study, English-language training, leadership development, civic engagement, U.S. study abroad, and career
preparation, LSP will equip selected Egyptian students with the skills and knowledge to advance the country’s
social and economic development.
The Academic Advisor will advise LSP students on academics, dorms, and university-related issues, as well as
personal issues that impact their overall academic and programmatic success. In order to do so, the Advisor will
work closely with the LSP University Coordinators and Assistant Coordinators at the partner universities, will
conduct regular campus visits, and hold office hours.
Under the direction of the Academic Advising and Partnerships Manager, the Academic Advisor will work
closely with the Leadership and Community Service Coordinator and IIE MENA administrative and finance
staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as the primary contact for students regarding all university and dorm issues as well as personal
issues that could impact students’ overall wellbeing and academic success.

In consultation with the Academic Advising and Partnerships Manager, develop a schedule for and
conduct campus visits and office hours;

Nurture relationships with University Coordinators and Assistant Coordinators by communicating with
them and meeting with them regularly to monitor students’ progress;

Prepare for and participate in quarterly meetings with the University Coordinators and Assistant
Coordinators to discuss best practices, common challenges, and share ideas for ways to continue to help
students achieve academic success;

Troubleshoot any problems that may arise and serve as emergency contact for students;

Receive and review mid-term and final semester evaluation reports on each student submitted by the
University Coordinators, address any academic or integration issues highlighted in these reports, and
discuss with the Academic and Advising Partnerships Manager in order to jointly develop suitable
study/progression plans if needed;

Monitor the academic performance of students who are placed on disciplinary or academic probation in
coordination with the University Coordinators;

In consultation with the University Assistant Coordinators, oversee the implementation of the program
policies and procedures such as book requests, request to leave the dorm, and Drop/Add Policy.

Follow up and receive university calendars and students’ schedules each semester.

Work as a liaison with students to solve any dorm or non-compliance issues raised by the partner
universities;

Monitor scholarship compliance to support financial disbursements of students’ bi-monthly stipend and
scholarship payments;

Coordinate closely with the Leadership and Community Service Officer to help coordinate schedules
and implementation of enrichment and career activities at each university;

Coordinate internally with the Study Abroad Coordinator and the Academic Advising and Partnerships
Manager and externally with the Partner University Coordinators on academic compliance and the
university placement of the Study in the U.S. component.

Responsible for complying with applicable contract and sponsor requirements and following all IIE
policies and procedures; and

Performs other duties and functions as assigned; IIE may add, change, or remove essential and other
duties at any time.
General Administrative Duties
 Work with IIE’s finance team on students’ overall program allowances, stipends, and reimbursements;
 Work with IIE Procurement Officer on students enrollment and disenrollment in the selected Medical
Insurance Plan; and
 Coordinate logistics for campus visits, computer maintenance visits, and coordinators’ meetings.

BA degree with experience in education, youth development, business, leadership or related field;
At least 5 years professional experience in a related field;
Preferred technical experience in a related field;
Preferred experience working on USAID-funded projects;
Preferred experience working in large educational, youth development or other related programs in the
MENA Region;
6. Knowledge of the Egyptian higher educational systems and the various academic programs
7. Must be fluent in the English and Arabic language;

Skills Required:
1. Proven leadership ability with excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills,
working collaboratively and cooperatively within a team environment.
2. The ability to work under pressure, to meet tight deadlines, and to handle multiple tasks concurrently.
3. Flexibility in working during evening and weekends when needed in LSP leadership component
sessions, activities and trips
4. Availability to travel domestically within Egypt for campus visits and sometimes other places for
leadership and/or outreach activities.
5. Problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
6. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge Microsoft Office 2010; internet
software and database software.
