THE EDNA GREENWAY SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Edna Greenway taught students from elementary school and high school through college
and seminary to speak and love the Spanish language. Therefore the Spanish Department
honors her with an endowed scholarship, so that future generations of students will benefit
from her Reformed, Christian perspective on teaching and learning even after she has retired.
This scholarship encourages students to reflect on and articulate the importance of the
integration of faith in their own lives and careers.
Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll full time the following year

Be entering the junior or senior year

Be a Spanish Education major (Elementary or Secondary)

Have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher

Submit an essay of 300-500 words answering the question “How will you integrate your
faith into teaching Spanish?”

Submit a list of applicant’s volunteer activities

Submit a list of activities / work done in conjunction with Calvin’s Spanish department

Provide two recommendations, one from a professor, attesting to the applicant’s integration
of faith in life.

Your essay should be typed using the following specifications: Times New Roman font size 12,
double-spaced with 1 inch margins, header with your name on every page. Please read the
questions on the back of this sheet to help guide your thinking and your answer.
Completed application is due second Friday of March by 5:00 pm. Candidates will be notified
after March 31 of their success in obtaining this scholarship.

Given the fact that you have not had much teaching experience beyond the classes you have
taken and the tutoring you have done, we offer the following questions to help guide you with
your essay. You do not have to address all of these issues, just the ones you feel comfortable
answering. Please do not just answer the questions but rather incorporate them into your
essay. Be specific and give concrete examples if you can.
