The Faculty for the Ph.D. in Management Program
Amended by the Executive Committee August 30, 2010, with the approval of Dean Gary Roth of the
Rutgers-Newark Graduate School
The Faculty of the Ph.D. in Management Program consists of individuals appointed to the Faculty of the
Rutgers Graduate School-Newark by its Dean for the purpose of participating in the Program.
Nominations originate with the Director of the Program. The Director submits nominations to the
Program's Coordinating Committee, which makes recommendations to the Dean. The Dean may, at his
or her discretion, seek additional advice from the Graduate School's Committee on Faculty and Student
Review before making an appointment.
There are three categories of membership:
 Full members have the right to vote at meetings of the Faculty of the Graduate School and at
meetings of the Faculty of the Program. They are also eligible to teach doctoral courses, serve on
qualifying examination and dissertation committees, serve on Program and Graduate School
governance committees, and chair dissertation committees.1
 Associate members also have the right to vote at meetings of the Faculty of the Graduate School and
at meetings of the Faculty of the Program. They may serve on Program and Graduate School
governance committees. At the discretion of the Program Director, they may be asked to serve on
dissertation committees. In unusual circumstances and with the approval of the Program Director,
they may be asked to serve on qualifying examination committees or teach doctoral courses. They
are not eligible to chair dissertation committees, except with special permission from the Dean of the
Graduate School.
 Adjunct membership allows participation in the Program by adjunct professors and qualified persons
from outside the Rutgers University and NJIT faculty. Adjunct members have voice but no vote at
faculty meetings. At the discretion of the Program Director, they may be asked to teach doctoral
courses or to serve on qualifying examination and dissertation committees.2 They may chair
dissertation committees only with approval of the Dean of the Graduate School.
Appointment is for a term of at most 5 years.
The Program's Coordinating Committee has established the following guidelines for the three categories
of membership:
 Full members are expected to hold a Ph.D. and to have a regular appointment as an assistant,
associate, or full professor at Rutgers or NJIT. They must exhibit scholarly accomplishment and
currency by having published at least 3 articles in peer-reviewed journals or one scholarly book in
the past five years. In exceptional cases where there is a need to appoint as a full member an
individual who has only received their doctoral degree in the past five years, this standard may be
reduced in proportion to the time since the degree was received. In this case, however, at least one
peer-reviewed journal article will be required, and the term of appointment may not extend beyond 5
years after the degree was received.
1
Each of these activities involves its own approval process for participation. Faculty members are scheduled to
teach doctoral courses by their Departmental Chair (or Dean in the case of faculty members in NJIT SOM), and the
teaching assignment must be approved by the Program Director. The Doctoral Coordinator for each major appoints
qualifying examination committees. The Program Director appoints each dissertation committee and its chair and is
responsible for making sure that the committee and the chair are qualified, on the basis of publications and other
recognition, to provide first-rate guidance to the student in the area in which the student proposes to work. Each
governance committee has its own procedure for election or appointment.
2
Adjunct membership is not required for service as an outside member of a dissertation committee. The Program
Director separately appoints each student's dissertation committee, including the outside member or members. Each
outside member's curriculum vita must be submitted to the Director, and these vitae are retained in the student's
dissertation proposal file. At least one outside member must be a recognized authority in the area of the student's
research. However, additional outside members may be appointed because of special expertise they can provide to
the student, even if they are not recognized authorities. Thus approval of an individual for one student's committee
does not imply approval for another student's committee.


Associate members are expected to hold a terminal degree, such as a Ph.D. or a J.D., and to have an
appointment at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor at Rutgers or NJIT. Although they
may not meet the standard of currency in research publication required for full membership, they are
usually expected to have published at least one scholarly book or at least one article in a peerreviewed journal, and they must be currently contributing to the education of students in the program
in some way. Possible areas of contribution include training doctoral students as teachers, obtaining
and managing funding for student research, and managing opportunities for collaboration with
industry or other educational institutions. Associate members are normally appointed in order to
participate in the program in particular ways, which may be specified in their letter of appointment.
If a faculty member has not yet published at least one scholarly book or refereed journal article, they
can be appointed as an associate member for only one year at a time, and the ways they are expected
to participate in the program must be specified in their letter of appointment.
Adjunct members are normally expected to have the same qualifications as full members. When
exceptional circumstances require the appointment of an adjunct member with different
qualifications, the term of the appointment cannot exceed one year.
When nominating an individual, the Program Director submits the attached form together with an up-todate curriculum vita for the individual. Articles in peer-reviewed journals must be marked with an
asterisk in the vita.
The Program Director normally nominates an individual for membership only when there is a need for
the individual's participation in a particular major. In the case of associate membership, the nomination
must specify the particular participation in the major that is needed. The Membership Committee may
recommend that the Dean make the appointment for that purpose or for other purposes.
Tenure-track members of the Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick who are neither full
nor associate members of the faculty of the program are listed in the program’s directory as affiliated
faculty.
