BHP MINERALS
BHP Scholarship Program
BHP operates three surface coal mines in northwest New Mexico supplying fuel to local coal fired power
plants in San Juan County. BHP operates the Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata Mines which produce 1215 million tons of coal annually. The BHP/NMO scholarship is to prepare tribal members for increased
leadership participation in the mining industry by offering limited awards to highly motivated Navajo and
Ute Mountain Ute Tribal members.
Applicants are awared based upon availability of funds and submission of documents to the scholarship
committee for evaluation of selection. Applications will be accepted during the months of April –June of
each year.

HEADLANDS INDIAN HEALTH CAREERS
The Headland Indian Health Careers Program is an eight week summer program (June 3-July 28, 2001 )
designed to increase the science and mathematics backgrounds and commication skills of American
Indian students interested in a health career and presently in their senior year of high school or freshman
year of college. It is an intensive and rigorous academic program. If the applicant is expecting an easy
summer they will be rudely disappointed. Participant will be expected to attend all classes and field trips,
keep up with rigorous schedule and large amounts of homework, and give a formal cultural presentation
and write a term paper on their tribe.

In 2001, the Kaiser Media Fellowships Program will award up to fifteen mini-fellowships to print,
television, and radio journalists to research and report on a health policy, health financing, or public health

WALMART SCHOLARSHIPS
Higher REACH Scholarship

Requirements:
1. Each Wal-Mart store will award one $1000 scholarship, payable over one year, to a local high
school graduating senior. The program is administered through the participating high schools.
Students must plan to attend an accredited institution. Private and home-schooled seniors are also
eligible to apply for this scholarship. Students must not be Wal-Mart associates or have parents
who actively work for Wal-Mart Stores. Selection is based on academic achievement, ACT/SAT
results, extracurricular activities, leadership qualities, and financial need.
2. Scholarships are awarded to graduation high school seniors in areas where Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
are located. The scholarship money can be used toward the student’s first year’s tuition, books, or
on campus room and board.
Walton Foundation Scholarship
*The recipient must be the child of a Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. associate who is employed full time (28 hours
per week or more) for one year as of March 1*
The Walton Foundation Scholarship is a $6,000 scholarship payable over four years awarded to a college
bound high school senior. Applications are available starting in January from your location's personnel
office.
Deadline: Postmarked to Wal-Mart Foundation no later than March 1st.
Amount: 100 scholarships will be awarded company wide.
Requirements: This is an academic scholarship and applicants will be judged on the basis of grades,
financial need, academic record, and ACT/SAT test scores.
