Visiting Scholar Program
Project Introduction:
This program intends to provide an opportunity for sharing of expertise and knowledge
by the public sector universities/ Degree Awarding Institutes with learned expatriates or
foreign scholar from a reputed universities/ research organization abroad. This can be
achieved by way of engaging Visiting Scholars in the following:
1.
Graduate teaching and collaborative research.
2.
Conducting workshops, seminars and other thematic informal teaching.
3. Supervising and advising on a specific research techniques to advanced PhD
students, and /or faculty.
4.
To assist in establishing laboratories in new and emerging disciplines.
5.
Short courses in such discipline where local expertise is not available
Project Objectives:
The Visiting Scholars Program is focused on enhancing the quality of teaching and
research at the institution of higher education through sharing the expertise and
knowledge
of
expatriate
Pakistanis
and
foreign
experts.
A visiting scholar from a reputed university abroad is a source of inspiration and
guidance to the students and teachers of the host university. Main responsibility of the
visiting scholar is to teach a full credit semester course in his (her) field of specialization.
However the actual duration of the teaching hours is to be mutually agreed between the
scholar and the host institution. The visiting scholars acquaint the faculty members and
students with the recent development in their subject and its possible applications in
industry.
The scholar can also be additionally engaged in revising and updating the
curricula to bring it in consonance with market needs and at per with international
standards.

The Visiting Scholar has to be a PhD from HEC recognized university/
institution.
The scholar must be serving at a responsible teaching or research position at a
reputable academic/ research institution in a foreign technologically advanced
country.
People holding responsible position in organization other than education and
research are also eligible.
iv)
Applicants must have excellent verbal and written English communication
skills.
The requirement of a PhD degree may be substituted in case of:
v)
a) Clinical medical sciences discipline by terminal degree of MRCP, FRCS (UK)
or Diplomat American Board.
b) Arts Design (Studio Practice), Fine Arts and Architecture by recognized
means of excellence in the respective discipline.
Terms & Conditions:
Responsibility of Beneficiary Host Institution:
i)
It will be the responsibility of the host institution to provide local hospitality
i.e. transportation and accommodation etc. In this regard assurance from the
institution for provision of appropriate office space with all essential office
equipment before the start of assignment by Visiting Scholar will be required.
ii)
A detail assignment report will be submitted to HEC after the completion of
the visit by the visiting scholar. A complete report by the host institution will
be submitted including the benefits and the impact of the visit. Financial
Assistance Provided By HEC.

The visiting scholar funds are being made from Recurring/ Regular Budget of
HEC.
a) Travel Expenses: Economy class return air fare/ any other mode of
transportation as per government rules, the reimbursement will be on
actual travel expenses or maximum up to Rs.120,000/-and for professors
from USA and Canada maximum up to Rs:148,000/b) Honorarium (lump sum):
Rs.50,000/- Per Week
How to Apply:



Request is to be made by the host institution on the HEC prescribed Application
Form along with a detailed resume of the visiting scholar.
Application should be submitted to HEC at least three months prior to the
proposed visit of the scholar.
Application will be received and processed on rolling basis i.e. there is no dead
line for the submission of application.
Duration of Stay:
1. The term of appointment of the Visiting Scholar will be a minimum two weeks
and cannot be extended beyond 8 weeks.
2. The Visiting Scholar can be engaged to maximum of two visits with in a calendar
year.
