Career Specialist, G.A.P.
Employment Terms: This job is full-time 30-hour, benefited, FLSA Non-Exempt position in the Academic Affairs Division
that reports to the Director of the Gwinnett Advancement Program (GAP). This is position is funded by a WIOA grant through
the Atlanta Regional Commission.
Salary: Targeted salary is commensurate with education and experience not to exceed the budgeted amount of $23,400.00
per year.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university *and* Two (2) years of related work experience
Note:
Experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in cold calling, social work, or in employment services and career/job
development. Excellent human relation skills and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators, and
employers. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Competence in program planning, organizing, and training.
Job Description Summary:
Under general supervision, the Career Specialist is responsible for student career exploration, work experience opportunities,
and job placement activities. Performs other institutional assignments delegated by the Director of GAP, along with
representing GAP and GTC on regular or assigned duties in the community. Works closely with Goodwill case managers in
developing internship opportunities for GAP youth on-campus and in the community. Interacts with employers and serves as
liaison for GAP regarding student employment and workforce preparedness issues. Duties include, but are not limited to, the
following: provides access to career resources, workshops, and group or individual assistance to aid students in becoming
more employable; develops on and off-campus employment opportunities (part-time and full-time) for GAP program youth
(ages 16-24); provides job search and placement services; prepares and conducts client interviews and assessment
evaluations; creates a student employment referral system; collects and documents work placement data; uses Microsoft
Office applications, spreadsheets, internet search engines, and specialized job placement software; maintains student files
and performs data entry for internet-based and local GAP databases.

Assists in recruiting, qualifying, orienting, registering, and serving GAP participants.

Meets and works with students, faculty, area employers, college personnel, and the Atlanta Regional Commission to
develop and promote career and job placement services.
Assesses and compares other comparable job placement programs and implements operational changes as needed.
Researches, updates, and networks to keep abreast of employment trends and occupational outlook and maintains
labor market data.

Identifies educational program needs as they relate to job-searching skills and works with faculty to assist in using
resources in classes.

Prepares reports on the current status of students in the program indicating whether performance is aligned with
performance indicators, program goals, and progress schedule.

Enters data upon request and within established time frames.

Meets placement goals and provides data regarding placement of our students to administrators.
Plans and/or applies behavior management or modification techniques as appropriate to the assigned participant

Conducts periodic interviews with participants to ensure that training is proceeding as planned and competencies
are achieved
Creates and maintains GAP participant documentation files.
6. Student Relations

Provides student access to on-campus recruitment, job fairs, and company tours when applicable.

Contacts employers for referral and follow-up services within specified time limits.
