RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Research
*Student Researcher, Merck Undergraduate Research
University of Illinois at Springfield; 05/08-08/08
●Performed chemical analysis to determine water quality of various lakes around
Illinois.
●Performed filtrations, spectroscopy, field measurements, and ion
chromatography.
●Averaged 37.5 hrs per week throughout the summer and continued working
throughout fall and winter 2008 to analyze data
*Research Assistant
Southern Illinois University School of Medicine; 02/09-Present
●Primary focus: determining the subunit composition of nicotinic acetylcholine
receptors in posterior hypothalamic tuberomamillary neurons.
●Techniques performed: perfusion of rats, slicing brain tissue using Cryostat and
Vibratom, staining of slices using antibody binding techniques, fluorescent and
confocal imaging, cell culturing, electrophysiology, PCR, and electrophoresis.
●Averaged 37.5 hrs per week.
Observations
●Cardiac Catheter Lab, Alton Memorial Hospital; 05/07
Observed Cardiac Catheterization and stenting of 8 patients by Dr. Saad Bitar,
MD. These patients had arterial blockages that were corrected in most cases as I
observed. This observation allowed me the opportunity to view coronary
angiography and angioplasty. This drew my interest to cardiology, and
eventually towards cardiothoracic surgery.
●Obstetric department, Alton Memorial Hospital; 1/09
Observed a cesarean section performed by Dr. Jeff Turner, MD. This
observation allowed me to observe a different area of medicine than previous
observation.
●Emergency Room, Alton memorial Hospital; 1/10
Shadowed Dr. Rodger Hanko, MD. as he treated patients in the ER. This gave
me the opportunity to see and hear what a day would be like if I were to become
emergency room physician at a relatively smaller hospital.
●Southern Illinois Healthcare, Carbondale, IL; 1/10
Observed general surgeries performed by Dr. Frederick Dressen, DO. I
observed colonoscopies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, port placement and
removal, anesthesiologist procedures, and general procedures of interaction with
patients.
