Mean and Standard Deviation on Casio Calculator (FX-83ES)
Example 1 – List of numbers
Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the following array of numbers.
8, 8, 9, 11, 14
1. Press MODE  2  1
(this puts calculator in Stats mode)
2. Inputting the data:
Press 8  =
8=
9=
11  =
14  =
3. Press AC  SHIFT  1  4
(or 5 on fx-85GT)
4. For the mean, press 2  =
(you should get an answer of 10)
5. For standard deviation, repeat step 3 and then press 3  =
(you should get an answer of 2.28)
Example 2 – Frequency table
Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the following frequency table.
1. Press MODE  2  1
(this puts calculator in Stats mode)
2. Make sure you have a two column table. If you don’t, press
SHIFT  MODE  “down arrow”  3  1
3. Press 10  =
12  =
13  =
16  =
4. Now use the arrow button to bring the cursor to the top of the 2nd column and
press 12  =
5=
9=
7=
5. Press AC  SHIFT  1  4
(or 5 on fx-85GT)
6. For the mean, press 2  =
(you should get an answer of 12.394)
7. For standard deviation, repeat step 5 and then press 3  =
(you should get an answer of 2.228)
