Kindergarten Curriculum Night Summary
Dear families,
Welcome to our classrooms! We look forward to getting to know both you and
your child throughout the school year. Here is some helpful information about
our rules and routines, all of which are in place to ensure a safe and welcoming
learning environment for each and every student. Please read the following
information carefully. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Ms. Rowan, Ms. Hleuka, Ms. Arlette, Ms. Mester and Ms. Penney
POETRY FOLDER/BORROW-A-BOOK PROGRAM
A poem will be sent home in your child’s poetry folder each Friday. Share the
poem with your child, have them recite it, point to the words and have them
finds letters or words she/he knows as you enjoy the poems together. Please
return the poetry folder each Monday.
We will begin our Borrow-A-Book reading program in early October. Your child
will bring home one book each night that they should read with you. Please fill in
the ‘caterpillar’ log sheet with the date and your initials. Return the book daily
for exchange. Please take good care of the books as they are expensive to
replace and you will be expected to pay the cost.
BIRTHDAY/HOLIDAY TREATS
Davis has a strict ‘no food sharing’ policy. We will not be accepting or
distributing any edible treats in our classrooms. If you choose to celebrate an
occasion with classmates, we will only allow non-food items such as bookmarks,
pencils, stickers, etc. If you are sending these types of treats for your child’s
classmates, please ensure there are enough for everyone; extras will be
returned to you.
SNACKS
There is time each morning and each afternoon for our students to have a
snack. Please ensure you are only sending your child with fruits and vegetables
as snack. We have several children with life-threatening allergies, and this will
help us control what they are exposed to. Many other types of snacks also have
a lot of waste from packaging, we are trying to teach students the importance
of protecting the environment and small things they can do to help. Please do
not send juice/milk for snack, there is a water fountain in the classroom. You
may send a refillable water bottle.
LUNCH
We have lunchroom supervisors who are with the children who stay for lunch.
The supervisors are available to assist children with opening packaging and
containers and to ensure all foods are nut-free. Please send re-usable cutlery.
If you send food without packaging (ie. Crackers, cookies), please include a note
that states the food is nut-free to avoid confusion.
QUIET TIME
We have a 30 minute quiet time when children come back inside after playing
outside at lunch. This is meant as a short rest period and as a transition (from
play outside) to learning. Most children do not sleep; however some children find
it necessary.
HOME SUPPORT FOR SCHOOL
Please ensure that your child has clothing that they can easily put on and take
off when using the washroom. Some clothes have complicated buttons and/or
fasteners and this can create anxiety for some children.
Please work on having your child dress him/herself independently (coats,
zippers, backpacks). If your child cannot tie laces, please do not send shoes
with laces.
At home, you may want to provide additional opportunities to use pencils,
markers, paint brushes, scissors and glue. While we do all of these things at
school most day, extra practice will increase your child’s skill and confidence.
Thank you for your support and cooperation.
