Purpose of the Post:

This post is funded to undertake research into the effect of maternal fish oil supplementation in high risk pregnancies and t he effect on their infants’ brain MRI and neuro-behaviour using advanced Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging techniques.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The post holder will join a multidisciplinary academic group at Imperial College London in a study that will involve undertaking neurodevelopmental assessments on the babies born to the study participants, liaison with the neonatal neuroimaging research fellow who is using a state of the art 3.0T MR Scanner newly installed within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at

Hammersmith and Queen Charlottes Hos pital and St Thomas’s Hospital.

A second key responsibility will involve data entry and analysis of the psycho-behavioural assessment information already collected on the mothers in the study.

This post-holder would be expected to work towards a MD degree.

An understanding and proficiency in use of infant neurodevelopmental assessment tools will be desirable but training may also be offered. An analytical mind is desirable. Training in advanced statistical methods will be offered.

The successful applicant will be experienced in clinical neonatal medicine, be intellectually curious and enjoy participating in a busy neonatal research programme. The post-holder will also participate, in accordance with their personal career and research objectives, in the clinical teaching programme and the many academic training opportunities offered through

Imperial College.

Key Responsibilities:

To ensure that the follow up protocol schedule for the study infants is adhered to, e.g. the clinical assessments at outpatient visits and MRI scans.

The arrange the MRI Brain scans of babies recruited into the study and accompany babies for the scans and ensure study subjects attend on schedule in liaison with the project administrator.

To acquire and/or consolidate research skills to enable the collation of data and interpretation.

To be able to competently resuscitate a baby in the event of an emergency during the study e.g. during a scan or outpatient visit.

To be able to interpret correlations between clinical developmental function and MRI brain findings in the study infants.

To attend meetings with supervisor at regular weekly intervals

To attend a GCP course and other appropriate research affiliated training required.

To ensure research and clinical targets are met.

To be familiar with, and to comply with the requirements of good clinical and research governance

To participate in the teaching and training activities of the Department at request of main supervisor.

To register for a MD degree

To arrange any clinical revalidation requirement with main supervisor

Education and Qualifications

Essential

Medically qualified

Full registration with the General Medical Council

Desirable

Aims to specialise in neonatal paediatrics

MRCPCH or equivalent

Other degree e.g. BSc or MSc

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

Recent demonstrable NICU experience as a Speciality Training Doctors in a Level II or III neonatal unit

Previous participation in audit or a research project

Desirable

Publication in peer reviewed journal

Prior experience in MRI and computational analysis of imaged

Knowledge of statistical methods and data handling

Skills and Abilities

Able to effectively resuscitate and direct the management of emergencies in a neonatal setting in a calm and controlled manner

Ability to work within a clinical environment, communicating enthusiasm and interest to medical and radiography colleagues

Good verbal and written skills

Computer literate, practical knowledge of all Microsoft Office packages
