Key Points for Prescribing in Erectile Dysfunction
Patients without SLS indications should not be prescribed on the NHS unless they had
established prescriptions before September 14th 1998.
SLS indications are for a man who



has had prostatectomy or radical pelvic surgery
has renal failure treated by transplant who is receiving treatment for renal failure by dialysis
has diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, poliomyelitis, prostate cancer, severe
pelvic injury, single gene neurological disease or spina bifida
Patients reporting psychological distress because of the condition should be referred for
assessment before prescribing is initiated and psychological measures should also be tried
For any patient qualifying for NHS treatment guidelines advocate no more than 4 treatments
per month.

Sildenafil and vardenafil last about 4 hours and so are recommended for ‘when required’ use.
Tadalafil has a longer period of action; up to 24 hours so can be used for example over a
