Description of Students: Richard's 9th Grade Class

Roshanda is a highly competent student. She reads and writes above grade level. She completes her work conscientiously and on time. She takes responsibility in her group and gets along well with other students, although she sometimes "over-organizes". She comes from a middle class African American family where she lives with her parents and

2 younger siblings.

David is a smart student, reading and writing above grade level. His eyesight is very poor and he wears think glasses requiring accommodations in terms of where he sits and what he can read. When these accommodations are met, his performance and class participation are fine. He is confident enough to ask for assistance when needed. His social skills are average. He comes from a middle class Caucasian family.

Patricia reads and writes well above grade level. She works to get good grades since she is already focused on going to college. She possesses good critical thinking skills as well and often asks thoughtful questions. She has several close friends, but others see her as something of a snob. She comes from an upper-middle class Caucasian family.

Jordan reads and writes at grade level. He is a rather lazy student, doing what is needed to get by rather than applying himself. He has good social skills, but is not a favorite group member because he lets the others do the work. His hair is currently orange. He comes from a middle class Caucasian household comprised of his mother and older brother.

Ronnie is an average student. He reads at grade level, but writes at an 8th grade level.

Writing is difficult for him and he does not like doing it, so he does better on assignments that require multiple choice answers or oral presentations. He is very social and quite cool. He is confident around other people so students like him. He comes from a lowermiddle class Caucasian household.

Mandy reads and writes at grade level. She is quiet and shy, but does her work well. She participates in groups with encouragement. She lives in a middle class Asian household.

Tasha performs on grade level in reading and writing. She generally completes her work on time, but is not a very serious student. She is fun and has a good sense of humor, so she sometimes gets off task in individual and group work. She is well-liked by other students, but often slows the pace of a group with her digressions. She comes from a middle class African American home where she lives with her father and brother.

Christopher performs well below grade level in both reading and writing due to a learning disability that causes him to process information slowly. He is a serious student and wants to do well, but needs a lot of support to feel successful. He is rather shy, but the other students like him and give him lots of patient support. He comes from a middle class Caucasian family.

Todd is an average student. He reads and writes on grade level, but is not very motivated particularly in a traditional classroom. He responds better to active, hands-on methods activities as long as they don't require him to think too much. He is active in the school technology center and is almost always more motivated to work on a lesson when it includes a technology component. He lives in a middle class Asian household.

Nina reads and writes above grade level. She is interested in learning and applies herself well. Her social skills are average and she participates well in groups, always doing her part. She comes from a middle class Pakistani family and has several siblings.

Mattie reads and writes at an 8th grade level. She works fairly hard, but has trouble keeping up. She is quite heavy so her self-image is a bit weak, but she is jovial and other students like her. She comes from a lower-middle class African American family and lives with her mother.

Maria reads and writes at grade level. However, she does a minimum amount of work and generally appears bored and uninterested in class. Her social skills are just average, but school seems to be nothing more than something that interferes with her social life.

She comes from a large, lower-middle class Hispanic family.

Adrian is a highly intelligent student, performing well above grade level. He is a serious and creative thinker. At the same time, he has good social skills and has an easy manner with others. He often volunteers for or is chosen by others to take leadership roles in which he seems comfortable. He comes from an upper-middle class African American family.

Jose reads and writes above grade level. He works hard and applies himself well. His social skills are well developed. He is quite successful in track and field, at which he also works hard. He lives in an upper-middle class Hispanic family.

Karen reads well enough but is slow at comprehension. The same is true in writing, she writes well enough, but had trouble putting together complex sentences in which the meaning is clear. Her social skills are average, but she does not like to get help from others, often pretending she understands when in fact she doesn't. She tends to get better grades in group activities than in individual activities. She comes from a lower-middle

Asian home and lives with her mother.

Debbie reads and writes below grade level. She is very quiet and contributes little voluntarily. She lacks confidence in her ability to think, so she doesn't try very hard. She is also quiet around other students and does not seem to have close friends. She comes from a middle class Caucasian home; her parents are separated off and on.

Zack reads and writes at grade level. He does what is required, but does not show much enthusiasm for learning. He is very athletic and plays fall and spring sports. His social skills are average, but he doesn't show much enthusiasm for other people either. He comes from a middle class Caucasian home.

Douglas reads and writes at grade level, but just barely. He has a serious demeanor and looks like he is paying attention, although it's hard to be sure since he doesn't often answer questions correctly when called on. He carries his serious demeanor into his social relationships, and other students find him rather uninteresting. So he often appears to be observing from the fringes. He come from a lower-middle class Caucasian home.

Beth reads and writes at grade level. She could probably do better, but she is active in sports and this time away from her school work. Her homework is often not finished or hastily done. She has good social skills, but is also quite competitive, sometimes affecting her groupwork. She comes from a middle class Caucasian home which includes her aunt, uncle, and 3 cousins with whom she has lived for 10 years.

Corinna reads and writes above grade level. She is active in the Thespians and shows considerable dramatic flair in everything she does. She flourishes in active learning and problem solving situations. She is outgoing and has many friends, although they sometimes see her as too much of a gossip. She lives in an upper-class Asian home.
