Project Title (maximum 1 line):

Assessing and improving processes and outcomes of the McGill Primary Health Care Research Network

Hypothesis/Question to be Addressed (maximum 4 lines):

The McGill Primary Health Care Research Network (hereinafter the network) has adopted an approach called Organizational Participatory Research (OPR). There are two complementary research questions. (1)

How has the network followed best practices suggested by a systematic literature review of OPR studies?

(2) What have the outcomes associated with the network been so far?

Specific Aims (maximum 10 lines):

The purpose of the network, created in 2013, is to produce and apply research knowledge from and for clinical practice in partnership with primary health care clinics and individual members (clinicians, managers, patients and researchers). Clinics include McGill Family Medicine Units (e.g., CLSC Cote-desneiges, Herzl-CRIU, St-Mary’s hospital), and community settings providing primary care (e.g., ‘Maison bleue’). The student project will adopt an exploratory single case study research design (qualitative description). The case is the network. Specifically, the student’s objectives will be:

To gain an experience in conducting practical evaluation research;

To learn key processes and outcomes associated with participatory research;

To assess the processes and outcomes of the network;

To formulate recommendations for improving the network.

Role of Student (maximum 15 lines):

This summer student project is reading and writing intensive (no statistics, no lab activities).

Understanding written French is essential. A training or experience in social sciences will be an asset

(anthropology, communication, history, management, sociology, etc.). Based on existing criteria and data, the student will conduct an evaluation of the network. The assessment criteria are based on a CIHRfunded systematic literature review led by Drs Pluye and Macaulay (CIET-PRAM, http://pram.mcgill.ca

).

The data are routinely collected by the network coordinator using a diary, shared documents, email correspondence, meeting minutes, and completed questionnaires (including demographics).

The student will analyze the data and propose recommendations. For each criterion, they will assign relevant data, discuss their interpretation with supervisors, conclude, and propose a recommendation.

They will synthesize results and recommendations for improving participatory processes, preventing negative outcomes, and increasing positive outcomes. They will write a research report (abstract, introduction, background, method, results, discussion, and conclusion) that will be published in our online departmental journal ( http://mcgill-fammedstudies-recherchemedfam.pbworks.com

). The abstract will be submitted for a poster presentation at Family Medicine Forum, Toronto, fall 2015.
