What qualities are we looking for?
The priority of the Governors and the Leadership team is to raise even higher the
standards attained by our pupils in what is already a high performing school.
The Governors are therefore seeking to appoint a well qualified and experienced teacher
who has an existing record of outstanding success at Middle or Senior Leadership level
with the potential to develop quickly into an outstanding Deputy Headteacher. The
successful candidate may already have experience of working within a Leadership Team,
but this is not essential. The Governors would welcome applications from candidates with
serious aspirations to Headship within a few years.
The successful candidate will have a successful record as a classroom teacher and will be
able to teach his/her own subject(s) to A Level.
He/she will have clear ideas about how an already successful school can be further
improved and will be able to demonstrate that they have the managerial expertise and
knowledge to achieve this by being an “agent for change”. We will be looking for evidence
of this in the letter of application.
The successful applicant will be hardworking and able to take and sustain initiatives. They
will be able to get on well with pupils and be a good role model and will have a naturally
positive outlook about young people.
They will be a firm and fair disciplinarian who will take no nonsense and who will be a real
presence around school; will be supportive of colleagues and will lead by example; will be
able to liaise with parents and outside agencies and be able to “juggle” several tasks at the
same time; will also be an excellent administrator and be able to manage change
effectively. The candidate would take on responsibility for administration, statistics and
work with the school finance officer if the school moved to Academy Status.
A sense of perspective, a life out of school and a sense of humour are essential
requirements! The successful candidate will be sensitive to the needs of others and be
able to work within a team. He/she will understand what it is that makes a good school
and will be able to use his/her own particular strengths to enhance further the special
ethos which we are proud of at Wirral Grammar School for Girls.
The Duties of the Deputy Headteacher
Both of the Deputy Headteachers are expected to contribute fully to every aspect of school
life and have the opportunity to determine the school policy and to influence the school’s
future development. We regard it as being in the best interest of the school and post
holders if some of the roles of both Deputy Headteachers change from time to time.
However the skills and qualities of the successful applicant may require a change in the
Senior Leadership Team’s responsibilities.
The successful candidate will be expected to share the responsibility in all important areas
of school life including planning for improvement and financial planning. He/she will also
be expected to share responsibility for management of the school including, on a prearranged rota basis, during school holiday time.
How to apply
Applications should be made online via the TES Website on the official application form
provided. The link to this is: https://www.hirewire.co.uk/job/23513/ . As the TES Website
only allows you to upload one document you should paste to the bottom of this application
a letter of application which should be between two and three sides of A4. Applicants are
invited to use their letter to outline their strengths and describe what qualities they would
bring to the post.
It is quite natural that applicants will wish to outline their recent achievements, however,
we ask candidates to be succinct in this area as we are particularly interested in those who
can demonstrate a real understanding of what makes a successful school and a
successful Senior Leader who can show a real appreciation of the demands of being a
Deputy Headteacher.
Potential applicants should be under no illusions that this post will not be demanding,
however we believe that it will also be exciting and extremely rewarding, Wirral Grammar
School for Girls is an excellent school in which to work.
Applicants are encouraged to visit the school and talk to the Headteacher before the
deadline.
The deadline for applications is Monday 1st November at 12 NOON.
Candidates will be required from the afternoon of Wednesday 10 th November and
formal Interviews will be held on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th November 2010.
Successful applicants will be required for all days.
