Dear parents
You should now have received your child’s end-of-year
report. Included is summer homework for children to bring
back next term. Please support your child to do their best
with their summer holiday homework & make sure they
return their diaries (children going into Years 1 to 6) to
their new teachers in September. As well as the homework
given out with reports, KS1 and 2 should also do their
summer MyMaths tasks. You should also have a parent
questionnaire to complete.
Summer Fete
Thank you everyone for a wonderful and enjoyable summer
fete. There was so much to do, lovely food to eat, a super
raffle and stalls selling interesting items. Once again, the
PTA has done a sterling job in organising a great event –
and raised approximately £2,500 to boot! Well done and
thanks to all concerned.
Volunteers
We were delighted to see so many of our volunteers at
assembly on Monday. We are very privileged to have so
much support. Many of our activities would not be possible
without it from reading to sports to trips to the summer
fete and more besides. Thanks again to all volunteers
including those of you who could not make Monday’s
assembly.
Year 6 Footy
qualified for the semi-finals along with the 3 group
winners, both teams managed to qualify.
In the semi-final, Stoneydown faced Thomas Gamuel;
Waseem scored an early goal but, although they came close
to adding another, that goal was enough to win the game
1-0. The final was against Henry Maynard who had won
both the Birmingham & CHOB cups in the 11-a-side
competitions. However, Stoneydown were not overawed
and were the better team although neither team managed
a goal in normal team. It went into extra time when the
tiny margin between victory and defeat was never more
apparent. With time running out before penalties (again),
Stoneydown had a corner from which William had a
shooting chance but his effort narrowly went over the bar.
From the goal-kick, Henry Maynard cleared the ball which
bounced off 2 players and fell to their centre-forward who
hit a lovely curling shot wide of Justin in goal. This
unstoppable goal was followed by the final whistle so again
Stoneydown were left with the consolation of runners-up
medals. Added to that, the organiser announced at the
presentation that the ‘better team had lost’.
Small consolation but in the 3 years the boys have played
together, they have shown a good level of ability as well as
sportsmanship. Despite their disappointment, they shook
hands with their opponents and applauded them as they
lifted the cup. The boys now move on to secondary school
where they will continue to develop their skills and enjoy
more success with their football teams. I wish them all the
best and look forward to hearing about their matches
there. Philip Dawes
Sports Day
Unfortunately, due to the blistering heat, Sports Day was
cancelled yesterday. Sports Day will now take place in
September. A message was placed on the school website at
the weekend and letters and texts were sent on Monday.
Please do check the website when there are extreme
weather conditions in case there are any messages.
Charity Run Achievement
Medals!
The Year 6 football team took part in their last 7-a-side
competition at Stoneydown hoping to go one better, having
lost on penalties in the final in Years 4 and 5. They started
in good form beating St Joseph’s 2-0 in their opening game.
They were unlucky to concede a late goal against Mission
Grove to draw 1-1 and after beating St Saviours 1-0, we
knew it was going to be close as to who the group winners
were. As it turned out, both Stoneydown and Mission Grove
had the identical number of wins, draws, goals scored and
goals conceded. However because the best runner-up
On Sunday I went to Hyde Park to run the 5km Race for life.
It was hot and hard! All of the adults were walking and I
was the only child running. I was the first child to cross the
finish line in 46 minutes and I raised £750 for the Cancer
Society. I am going to run it every year and hopefully beat
my time. Ashleigh Y3 Swan

Debate
Yesterday we went to Kelmscott for a debating session with
three qualified speakers. There were six other schools
taking part and we were divided into 2 schools per speaker.
In the morning session, we learnt tricks about debating and
id a few exercises for learning how to speak without being
shy. After lunch, we prepared a debate on three subjects:
whether beauty pageants were necessary, whether violent
video games should be banned and whether footballers
should be paid less. After the debate, we gave feedback to
each other. It was really fun and we got to know new ways
of debating such as the Mace debating structure where you
have three speakers on each side and the opposition team
starts by defining the motion. The first speaker from the
proposition side puts the first points down and the second
speaker from the opposition puts their first rebuttal down
and it continues. The third speaker answers the questions
that the floor have asked and summarises the debate.

school. They are: Rukshana Chowdury, Silvia Vasile
Benjamin Thompson, Khadisha Gerald and Ella Speakman
who will be supporting us for a term. Saadia Vaid is joining
us as a Nursery Officer.
Goodbyes
We said good luck and goodbye last week to Maggie, who
has been supporting Swallow Class & other pupils, as she
prepares to have her new baby. This week we are saying a
sad goodbye to some of our TAs. Rosie and Suffiyah will be
training to be teachers, Sofia will be working as a part-time
Learning Support Assistant in the borough, and Zahra is
returning to studying. Leyton Orient coach Athena Younnis
is taking up a p.e teaching position at a Hackney secondary
school. We wish them all the best of luck.
Congratulations Fahmeeda and Mussarat
Congratulations to both Fahmeeda and Mussarat who are
leaving this week after many years at Stoneydown as
Teaching Assistants. Both have now qualified as teachers.
Mussarat is leaving to pursue her teaching career and
Fahmeeda will do the same but is having her new baby
first! We wish them both well in their new careers.
Year 3 and 4 went on a Kite flying trip to the marshes on
Monday. The sun was shining and it was a great day to test
the amazing kites that we all made in our Air topic.
Although there was not a lot of wind, everyone enjoyed the
day. We had a fantastic time in the park flying kites,
having lunch and playing games. Thank you to all of the
parent helpers that came along and helped for the day.

Summer Building Works
During the summer, extensive building works will be taking
place, which is why we cannot have a summer play-scheme
this year.
Last Thursday, twelve Reception children went to visit the
new Warner Road site. We were taken there by Councillor
Clare Coghill who explained to the children how excited
she was as she was seeing all the planning coming together
and the building works started. We all had to wear white
hard hats (not pink or blue!!) We also wore yellow high
visibility jackets.

Good Luck Year 6 Leavers
Kestrel Class are preparing to leave for the next stage of
their education. We hope they have fond memories of
Stoneydown and a pride in their achievements as they start
to prepare for secondary school.
Clare got to sit in one of the machines and the children
said it reminded them of Bob the builder! Hilary Ebden
