In the event of an emergency—Call 911 Immediately The Emergency Medical Treatment Act (EMTALA 1986) requires that the emergency room must provide treatment regardless of ability to pay or insurance status (section 1867 (a) of the social security act) HIV/AIDS Hotlines AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) ADAP is a federally funded New York State program which helps pay for certain HIV related medications and outpatient care 1-800-542-2437 New York Medicaid CHOICE Helpline 1-800-505-5678 Medicare 1-800-633-4227 Anonymous HIV Testing Free HIV testing can be provided to anyone upon request 1-800-462-6786 www.health.ny.gov/diseases/aids/testing/longisland.htm Center for Disease Control 1-800-CDC-INFO Free HIV/AIDS treatment information 1-800-448-0440 www.cdc.gov “Project Inform” Health information line 1-800-822-7422 www.projectinform.org/hotlines/ HIV Counseling Hotlines 1-800-872-2777 Deaf and Hearing Impaired: 1-800-369-3437 Spanish Hotline: 1-800-233-SIDA http://hab.hrsa.gov/gethelp/statehotlines.htm 1 HIV/AIDS Resource Guide New York State AIDS Hotline Recorded messages available 24 hours per day on topics of transmission, prevention, diagnosis, treatment of HIV/AIDS and general information on STDs. Referrals given for HIV Testing and other related services. 1-800-541-2437 http://www.nyaidsline.org/app/index.php?pid=13 Visit the website for additional phone numbers Partner Notification PNAP/CNAP For assistance and information about how to tell your previous and current partners about your HIV status (212) 442-3388 http://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/aids/facts/questions/publichealthlaw.htm Partner notification is important so that people can become aware of their HIV risk and receive HIV counseling and testing. Then they can take steps to protect themselves and their loved ones and get medical care sooner if they are infected. Treatment Hotlines If you think you have been exposed to HIV immediately go to the nearest emergency room. Within the first 2-36 hours of exposure, a treatment may prevent transmission. The treatment is not guaranteed to prevent transmission but is more likely to be effective when begun as soon as possible; generally, clinicians will not provide the treatment if more than 72 hours have passed since the exposure. Talk to your doctor or medical provider about PEP, and you will be better prepared/informed if there is an emergency situation.
