Preamble

JOB SPECIFICATION
1.
Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to the organisation's
goals (its expected outcome and how it is achieved).
Responsible for the management of orthopaedic trauma and acute orthopaedic services
 Participate in the provision of safe, best practice, cost effective clinical services to
patients
 Participate in achieving best practice in the design and delivery of clinical services to
patients

Provide on-site supervision of emergency surgical procedures and management of
trauma
Contribute to teaching / training at undergraduates and postgraduate levels.
Provide services and clinical support at a statewide level including country regions
by agreement
Participate in the development and maintenance of partnerships between
metropolitan and country regions
Undertake collection of data for the evaluation of key performance indicators in
relation to the management of orthopaedic trauma services
Undertake and contribute to research
Reporting/Working Relationships (to whom the person reports, staff for whom
the person is responsible, and other significant connections and working
relationships within the organisation).
Responsible to the Clinical Director / Head of Unit.
Will be required to collaborate closely with other medical specialists in the unit, senior
health professionals of the unit and other health professionals within the institution which
contribute to individual patient management.
Will be required to supervise the clinical practice of allocated trainee medical officers.
Will be required to supervise surgical procedures undertaken by trainee medical officers.

Special Conditions (such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements,
frequent overtime, etc.).
A formal process of credentialing will define your scope of clinical practice.
Full time appointment: At least 60% of rostered time will be spent in the management of
orthopaedic trauma or acute orthopaedic conditions, related research or clinical /
educational activity. The remainder may be utilised in the management of elective
orthopaedics in a declared subspecialty area of interest. This elective work may be
conducted at a site other than the RAH / FMC / LMH.
Part time appointment: All rostered time will be spent in the management of orthopaedic
trauma or acute orthopaedic conditions, related research or clinical/educational activity..
Regular participation in the after hours orthopaedic trauma on-call roster is required;
provision of services may be required at other sites across South Australia.
Consideration and negotiation of flexible working arrangements will be required dependant
on the workload demands and requirements for the management of orthopaedic trauma.
Must be prepared to attend relevant meetings and staff development / education activities
when rostered on duty.
Intra state travel may be required.
A formal review of performance/appraisal will be conducted annually in conjunction with the
Director / Head of Unit.
This Job & Person Specification to be reviewed 12 monthly, but will not be limited to this
time frame.

Statement of Key Outcomes and Associated Activities. (Group into major areas

Contribute to the provision of safe, best practice clinical services to patients of by:

Providing specialist medical services to patients. Specific clinical commitments when
rostered on duty are as follows;

Attend trauma review meetings

Attend and participate in clinical review and audit meetings
Participate and supervise scheduled orthopaedic trauma lists and emergency
orthopaedic trauma procedures

Coordinate the management and follow up care of orthopaedic trauma
patients

Attend and participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics and related clinical
activities

Participating in the ‘on-call’ roster on an regular basis relative to other salaried
and visiting orthopaedic specialist.
Providing a specialist opinion on patients referred for consultation.
Ensure the maintenance of appropriate documentation of significant patient
management decisions. This will include but not be limited to the inclusion of clinical
care in patients' medical records, the timely provision of discharge summaries, written
specialist opinions and requested medical reports
Ensure effective communication with care providers including GP’s to promote
continuity of patient care
Contribute to the achievement of best practice in the design and delivery of services
to patients by:

Participate in administrative activities associated with the provision of clinical services.
Specific administrative commitments are;

Attendance at department and unit meetings

Attendance at other committee meetings as membership and representation
required

Assist the Director / Head of Unit to plan and organise the delivery of clinical
services.

Foster the development of community networks

Compliance with all administrative and clinical procedures and policies
established within the unit

Contribute to the development of hospital-wide policies and procedures
Contribute to activities that ensure the safety and quality of clinical services and
demonstrate a commitment to continuous service improvement by:

Initiate and support clinical improvement activities. This will involve evaluation of
clinical processes and service outcomes, including patient safety, identifying possible
areas for improvement and implementing the required changes.

Contribute to the development, implementation and adherence to clinical guidelines
and protocols

Participate in data collection for bench marking and measurement of key performance
indicators

Responsibility for the analysis of key performance indicators, including those which
have been developed to measure outcomes in relation to the implementation of the
Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons

Support appropriate audit activities

Participate in AOA / College-based programs directed towards maintaining the highest
standards of professional care

Maintain an awareness of risk in the clinical environment and actively supporting and
contributing to risk management initiatives

Report sentinel events, potential medical negligence claims and adverse patient
incidents


Provide appropriate support, direction to undergraduate students, trainee medical
officers, visiting fellows and postgraduate students by:

Provide appropriate direction, supervision and assignment to Fellows, Registrars,
Resident Medical Officers and Interns, thereby ensuring the appropriate management
for patients and their families

Support educational and performance development needs of trainee medical officers

Contribute to education and training programs for all staff at both undergraduate and
postgraduate level

Act as a role model and mentor for staff

EDUCATION:
Qualification of Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (Orthopaedics)
Satisfies requirements to be registered by the Medical Board of South Australia as a
specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery
