The Group Psychotherapy Subcommittee of the Psychotherapy Program invites
you to attend Group Day, which will be held at the Mount Sinai Hospital. This is
an educational event to which all residents are invited to attend. The objective of
Group Day is to provide residents with an opportunity to experience and learn
about group dynamics, cohesion, group leadership and group therapy principles,
by being themselves in a group of several hours duration. There is no formal
didactic component to the day, but there will be great opportunities for learning.
These are not psychotherapeutic groups: their purpose is educational. However,
learning occurs through the process of actual participation in the group, and
participation is therefore required for the whole day. Group Day is endorsed by
the Postgraduate Education Committee as a full day educational event and
participation in Group Day is a component of overall training in Group Therapy.
Group leaders are faculty members of the Department of Psychiatry who are
experienced in conducting groups.
NOTE: Residents must attend Group Psychotherapy day twice over the course
of their entire residency.

A certificate of completion will be provided, which will clarify the knowledge and
skills which the individual has obtained in this CANMEDs Role.
PGYIIs - Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). IPT is a brief, empirically supported
psychotherapy that helps patients who suffer with depression in the context of
universal life events of loss, change or conflict. Following your foundational year
of training in CBT and dynamic models, we hope this workshop will build upon
and expand your repertoire of psychotherapeutic knowledge and technique.
Note that this workshop will be open to PGYII-Vs however enrollment will be
limited; please RSVP to Jwilson@mtsinai.on.ca to confirm.
The usual focus in Couple Therapy, which is not offered at all sites, is as follows:
we start with a theory presentation, then proceed to use a simulated couple to
examine technique and application of the theory, and end with a video of a
couple session, if possible. Discussion is encouraged throughout the afternoon
Note This is a mandatory workshop for residents in Child and Geriatrics rotation.
Other residents are invited.
(refer to PGY 1 schedule for details)
There will be lectures from both clinician-scientists and basic neuroscientists, and
open discussion on many controversies about the brain and behaviour.
Presenter: TBA
(refer to PGY 1schedule for details)
All exams are mandatory and must be written on these two assigned dates. Not
writing the exam will be viewed as a major breach of professionalism.
