Draft objectives/expectations for the placement
About the unit/department
The In-patient Surgical Physiotherapy team
comprises of 15 staff members which comprise of
Band 7, 6, 5, and 3 qualified and non-qualified
staff.
We are responsible for the provision of
physiotherapy care to:
16 Bedded Intensive Care Unit – Varied
Clinical Workload
- 24 Bedded Step Down Unit – Varied Surgical
Clinical Workload
- 5 Surgical Wards with specialities that include;
-
ENT and Maxillofacial, Vascular, upper GI,
colorectal, Urology, General Surgery
-
ENT/Maxillofacial Out-patient based follow up
Clinic
We also have close links with the Oncology and
Women’s Health Physiotherapy Teams as well as
the Surgical Occupational Therapy Teams.
Conditions likely to be seen whilst on placement
Multi – trauma e.g. RTA, industrial injuries
Sepsis
Critically ill medical patients e.g. severe
pneumonia
Lower limb Amputees
Bariatric surgery
Major ENT and Maxillofacial surgical procedures,
including reconstructions, laryngectomies
Abdominal surgical procedures e.g. procedures
which require a laparotomy
Major Urological procedures
Upper GI surgical procedures e.g. Ivor-Lewis
Oesophagectomies
Opportunity to spend time with the Women’s
Health Physiotherapy Team maybe available.
Conditions may include breast and gynae
surgery.
Learning Opportunities
Working along side qualified and non-qualified
clinicians in Critical Care and Ward
environments
Ward management opportunities, which would
include;
- Obtaining hand-over’s

Hours
Normally 8:00 – 4:30 although this is normally
dependent on travel arrangements and clinical
responsibilities of the Clinical Educator.
Lunch arrangements
A 30 - 45 minute lunch break is normally taken
around midday.
We have kitchen facilities in the department for
meal preparation including a fridge for storage.
In addition there is a large restaurant, League of
Friends shops, and a ‘Marks & Spencer Food
outlet, Costa Coffee shop and Boots located at
the Front Entrance of the main hospital, with a
cash machine.
Changing facilities/Uniform
We expect all students to change into their
uniform once on-site in the changing facilities
provided.
We expect all students to wear regulation
uniforms which would include;
 Navy blue trousers
 Navy blue or black socks
 Black flat shoes (not open-toed) or white
trainers
 White tunic (worn with shirt and tie
underneath for male students)
 Or white polo-shirt
 Hair should be up off the collar, nails
unpolished and clipped short, make up at
a minimum and one pair of stud earrings
and a wedding band the only jewellery
worn.
1 small locker is available for valuables.
Travel
Parking facilities are very limited with most staff
having to park off-site.
