An Overview of IP for Monitoring

• IP Fire Alarm Monitoring

Secure, reliable fire alarm communications method using IP network

Viable choice for those experiencing POTS communications troubles

 Telco providers are multiplexing to save cost

 Analog lines going away!

Reduces or eliminates monthly cost of analog phone lines to the end user

Compatible to VoIP routers and VoIP provider networks

Connection Supervision increased from once every 24 hours to once every 90 seconds

4

An Overview of IP for Monitoring

• Why IP? Why now?

Current TCP/IP networks are mature, robust and reliable

 Mission-critical services (bank and stock transactions, retail, etc) rely on IP, why not Fire Alarm?

Traditional telephone systems removed in favor of VoIP

Increases efficiency of alarm transmission

 Always on - No need for call setup

 High transmission speeds - Alarm is transmitted in seconds

 Internet access is shared - No need to pay for an extra IP line

• At the customer location

• Many lines at the Alarm Receiving Center (ARC)

5

An Overview of IP for Monitoring

• Faster alarm transmission

Means help arrives faster

Full Contact ID reporting to pinpoint trouble fast

Telephone network

• Telco Dialer Model

Transmission can take >1 minute end-to-end

Monitoring stations usually pay for 800 numbers (or even local calls) for the panels to dial in

Cost passed to end users in fees typically on a per call basis

Comm failures are not detected by the monitoring station until a 24 hour test signal is lost

Not compatible with VoIP scenarios

7

An Overview of IP for Monitoring

• Easy to install

Fits right inside or right beside the panel

Fast programming and simple interfaces

Can set up at the office and transport to the job site

Programs via laptop/desktop

It answers any phone number dialed by the panel so no panel changes required

8

An Overview of IP for Monitoring

• None of the private radio network problems

Large investment for a capable radio network

Best in metro/city where accounts are close

 At network fringe, finding multiple paths difficult

 Panel is relying on the integrity of the accounts around them to relay messages.

Some radio systems use the Fire panel printer output as the connection means.

 Printer output is not expected in the critical alarm communications path

 Software updates may alter Printer output

9

An Overview of IP for Monitoring

• This is a business building opportunity for installers

The savings in phone line charges will pay for the installation

It’s a source of new work for installers

10

IP Solutions - IP Communicator

• The IP communicator module allows NOTIFIER panels to use a customer‘s existing IP network as a communication path to transmit alarms

• It offers performance, functionality enhancements, and cost savings to traditional digital dialer communicators

11

IP Solutions - IP Communicator

• Full bi-directional access to the alarm panel over the internet

• No third party access to information (latest 512 bit encryption)

No geographic limitations (UD operator can be anywhere)

Supervision is outstanding

– every 90 seconds

Works with any fire panel

• Remote Diagnostics allows troubleshooting from any connected PC

16

IP Solutions – System Integrity

• Provision for disaster recovery

Based on the architecture of IP receivers, remote duplicate receivers can be located anywhere!

If a site is brought down for any reason, (fire, flood, etc.) a remote site can provide immediate switch over

IP receivers permit duplicate monitoring for troubles by an end user or alarm dealer for better service to end user subscribers

17

IP Solutions - Secure Access

• Confidentiality

All exchanged IP traffic is encrypted in AES-512

Meets and exceeds SIA IP specification-512 bit Advanced

Encryption Standard (AES)

• Anti-replay protection, man-in-the-middle protection

The VisorALARM only serves registered IP Communicators

 The registration process is password protected

IP Communicator programming access is password protected

The VisorALARM programming is user and password protected

 Three user access levels

• Anti-device substitution

IP Communicator registers into the VisorALARM during installation with unique and non-writable information
