Warm Up: Dachshunds are selectively bred
to fit into badger holes. What do you think is
the difference between selective breeding
and natural selection?
Evolution vs. Selective Breeding
Evolution is the gradual change of
species over time. Natural selection
and “survival of the fittest” control
evolution. People trying to create a
particular set of traits control selective
breeding.
• Natural selection: process where
individuals that are better adapted to their
environment survive and reproduce
longer.
• Survival of the fittest – organisms with the
best adaptations live longer so reproduce
more.
• Bacteria change and antibiotics may not
work! – antibiotic resistant.
