The Centro Stefano Franscini is the congress centre of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Zurich located in the South
of Switzerland. It financially and organizationally supports international scientific conferences (February – November) and the
so called “ETH Winter Schools@Monte Verità” (November – February). The Centre also organizes some outreach events in the
context of its international conferences; such appointments are open to the local public and are usually held in Italian.
Il Centro Stefano Franscini è la sede congressuale del Politecnico federale di Zurigo situato nella Svizzera meridionale. La sua
attività consiste nel sostenere finanziariamente ed organizzativamente convegni scientifici internazionali (nel periodo febbraio –
novembre) e le cosiddette “ETH Winter Schools@Monte Verità (novembre – febbraio). Il Centro organizza anche alcuni eventi di
divulgazione scientifica nell’ambito dei suoi convegni; tali appuntamenti sono aperti al pubblico della regione e solitamente si

Discourse approaches to financial communication (DAFC). Bridging the gap between texts
and markets
The textual analysis of financial communication documents attracted several scholars from
economic and linguistic disciplines, interested in understanding the strategic functions of the
narrative aspects of these documents, and in measuring their impact on market transactions
and investment decisions. The DAFC conference aims at fostering dialogue among these
scholars to stimulate original research avenues, whose outputs can also benefit practitioners.
Approcci discorsivi alla comunicazione finanziaria (DAFC). Colmare il divario tra testi e mercati
L’analisi testuale dei documenti di comunicazione finanziaria ha attirato molti studiosi di
discipline economiche e linguistiche, interessati a capire le funzioni strategiche degli aspetti
narrativi di tali documenti e a misurare il loro impatto sulle transazioni e sulle decisioni di
investimento. La conferenza DAFC vuole favorire il dialogo tra questi studiosi per creare nuove
piste di ricerca, i cui risultati possano portare beneficio anche ai professionisti.
International workshop on organic nitrogen and plant nutrition – from molecular
mechanisms to ecosystems (OrgN2014)
Nitrogen (N) is crucial for plant productivity. Synthetic N fertilisers drive crop yield at the cost
of pollution and environmental and human health. The workshop provides a forum to discuss
how to improve nitrogen supply systems. Current knowledge and on-going research on soil,
plant, and microbe sciences will evaluate the role of organic N in the quest for sustainable N
use.
Conferenza internazionale sull’azoto organico e la nutrizione delle piante – dai meccanismi
molecolari agli ecosistemi (OrgN2014)
L’azoto (N) è essenziale per la produttività delle piante. I fertilizzanti azotati sintetici
determinano rese maggiori a scapito dell’inquinamento dell’ambiente e della salute umana.
La conferenza è un’occasione di dibattito sul miglioramento dei sistemi per l’apporto di N.
Attraverso le conoscenze attuali e i risultati delle ricerche in corso in ambito agronomico,
vegetale e microbiologico si valuterà il ruolo dell’azoto organico per un uso sostenibile.
Molecular Nanosystems
Many technical and scientific innovations today are based on natural and artificial structures
on the nanometer scale. Examples are the development of materials with novel physical and
chemical properties and the study of biomolecular interaction. The conference shall provide
an interdisciplinary exchange which is essential to link efforts and methods in these fields of
modern research.

Molte delle innovazioni scientifiche e tecnologiche sono oggi basate su strutture naturali e
artificiali su scala nanometrica. Esempi si ritrovano nello sviluppo di materiali con nuove
proprietà fisiche e chimiche e nello studio di interazioni biomolecolari. La conferenza dovrà
fornire un scambio interdisciplinare, che è essenziale per collegare i risultati e i metodi in tali
campi della moderna ricerca.
49th Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment meeting (AGAGE49)
The 49th meeting of the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE49) is the
most important series of meetings world-wide for non-CO2 greenhouse gases and ozonedepleting substances. In addition, the meeting is open to scientists from other atmospheric
networks and research institutes as well as all interested atmospheric scientists related to
non-CO2 greenhouse gas measurements and modeling.

Il 49mo congresso dell’organizzazione “Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment
(AGAGE49)” è il congresso mondiale più importante che si occupa delle sostanze non-CO2 che
hanno un effetto serra e sono dannose per l’ozono. Questo simposio è destinato a scienziati
che lavorano nell’ambito delle ricerche atmosferiche sia nelle misure o nella modellazione di
queste sostanze nocive non-CO2.
Theoretical and Practical Aspects of the Elliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problem
The discrete logarithm problem for finite fields and algebraic curves over finite fields is one
of the most challenging open questions in mathematical cryptology. Various theoretical and
practical aspects of the problem have been extensively studied in the past decade. The goal
of the conference is to bridge the theoretical and practical aspects of the problem allowing
for better collaboration between different research communities that work on this problem.

Il problema del logaritmo discreto per campi finiti e curve algebriche definite su campi finiti è
una delle questioni più complesse in criptologia matematica. Alcuni aspetti teorici e pratici del
problema sono stati studiati approfonditamente nell’ultima decade. Lo scopo della conferenza
è di collegare aspetti teorici e pratici del problema, facilitando una migliore collaborazione tra
diverse comunità scientifiche che lavorano a questo problema.
Systems genetics and evolution of non-human (model) organisms
This conference is dedicated to discussing recent advances in systems and evolutionary
genetics. Emphasis will be on non-human organisms from yeast to mouse. The principal topics
will revolve around understanding the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms underlying
genomic variation in non-human organisms and how this variation results in phenotypic
differences between individuals of a species.

Questa conferenza è dedicata alla presentazione dei recenti sviluppi della genetica evoluzionaria
e di sistemi ponendo particolare enfasi sugli organismi non umani come lieviti e topi. I temi

Cultural Genealogy and Theory of the Clown
The circus established two distinct types: the lofty, poetical White Clown and the oafish, childish
Red Clown. Beyond the circus, in theatre and cinema, we identify a third type: the malicious,
diabolical Black Clown, the Mephisto, the Joker. The Three-in-One figure expresses the
paradoxical nature of the clown, the complex unity of contradiction in conduct. The conference
brings both scholars and artists together to debate upon the cultural history of the clown, his
role in the performing arts as well as in society.
Genealogia culturale e teoria del clown
Il circo ha stabilito due distinte tipologie di clown: il Bianco, nobile e poetico, e il Rosso, goffo
e infantile. Fuori dal circo, nel cinema e nel teatro, si può individuare un terzo tipo: il Nero,
malizioso e diabolico come Mefistofele o il Joker. Con i suoi tre colori, il clown rivela la propria
natura di figura paradossale che riunisce caratteristiche e comportamenti contrastanti. Il
congresso è l’occasione per un incontro tra studiosi e artisti dove discutere la storia culturale
del clown e il suo ruolo sia nelle arti sceniche, sia nella società.
Nonequilibrium problems in physics and mathematics
We address the mathematical study of non-equilibrium questions. The setup is a (quantum-)
mechanical system which is connected at its boundary to “heat” and “particle” reservoirs.
The talks will present the current state of research in this context and point to the many open
questions which remain. We imagine an atmosphere with a few selected talks and lots of time
for discussions.
Problemi del non equilibrio in fisica e matematica
Il convegno è dedicato alla fisica del non equilibrio e alla sua analisi matematica. Il quadro è
dato da un sistema (quanto-)meccanico connesso ai suoi bordi a dei serbatoi di “calore” e di
“particelle”. Le presentazioni illustreranno lo stato attuale della ricerca e indicheranno
le molteplici questioni irrisolte in questo ambito. Prevediamo inoltre di dare ampio spazio alle

New Advances in Sustainable Resource Use and Economic Dynamics (SURED 2014)
The conference covers the complex interrelations between economic activity and environmental
systems as well as its implications for sustainable development. The main focus lies on
the economic effects of climate change and the corresponding risks and uncertainties.

Economic Inequality, Labor Markets and International Trade (ILMIT)
In recent decades, the world has undergone major changes regarding globalization and
economic inequality. We discuss the complex interrelations between income inequality and the
patterns of international trade. On the one hand, we debate how the distribution of resources
affects the patterns of trade and on the other hand how international trade impacts factor
prices and inequality.

Negli ultimi anni, il mondo è andato incontro a profondi cambiamenti nell’ambito della
globalizzazione e della disuguaglianza economica. Noi ci proponiamo di argomentare
le complesse interconnessioni tra disuguaglianza economica e schemi del commercio
internazionale. Da un lato investighiamo come la distribuzione delle risorse influisce sugli
schemi di commercio internazionale, dall’altro esaminiamo l’impatto del commercio
internazionale sulla disuguaglianza e sui prezzi dei fattori produttivi.
Jeremiah’s Scriptures: Production, Reception, Interaction, and Transformation
The conference aspires to engage current scholarship on traditions of Jeremiah and Baruch
in both the Hebrew Bible and in ancient Jewish and Christian literature. It will investigate the
history of reception and the growth of tradition “biblical and para-biblical“ as aspects of the
interpretive expansion of earlier sources within and beyond the book of Jeremiah.

Good Sense and Dominant Ideology in Galaxy Formation and Evolution
This meeting is structured around a set of deliberately provocative questions, posed by Prof
George Lake who has just turned 60, and is known for his influential work in computational
astrophysics, and galaxy formation and evolution. The questions are divided into five topics:
the origin of galaxy morphologies, the Milky Way, prospects for dark-matter detection, the
formation of giant planets and the future of computing.

Dynamics of complex fluid-fluid interfaces
The mechanical and structural properties of fluid-fluid interfaces have a significant effect on
the properties of multiphase soft matter systems. The dynamic behavior of these systems is
extremely complicated and up to now often poorly understood. The aim of this workshop is to
consolidate the discussion on the behavior of multiphase systems with complex interfaces and
stimulate new strategies for combining experimental, theoretical, and numerical approaches.
Dinamica delle interfacce complesse fluido-fluido
Le proprietà meccaniche e strutturali delle interfacce tra due fluidi hanno un impatto diretto
sulle proprietà dei fluidi complessi multifasici. Il comportamento dinamico di questi sistemi è
estremamente complesso e fino ad ora scarsamente compreso. L’obiettivo di questo workshop
è quello di consolidare la discussione sul comportamento di fluidi complessi che presentano
interfacce fluide e di stimolare la formulazione di nuove strategie atte a combinare approcci
sperimentali, teorici e numerici.
Recent Developments in String Theory
The dominant topic in string theory in the past decade has been the AdS/CFT correspondence.
It continues to be a rich source of ideas, and has for example led to important new insights into
the structure of large N gauge theories and Chern-Simons theories, as well as higher spin
theories. The aim of the conference is to bring some of the proponents of these developments
together.

Nell’ultimo decennio l’argomento dominante nella teoria delle stringhe è stato senz’altro
la corrispondenza nota come AdS/CFT. Tale corrispondenza continua ad essere una ricca

struttura delle teorie di gauge a grande N e delle teorie di Chern-Simons, così come delle

Migrations and Transfers in Prehistory: Asian and Oceanic Ethnolinguistic Phylogeography
The reconstruction of prehistory through genetics, linguistics and archaeology has led to new
insights into the movements of human populations out of Africa across Eurasia to the New
World. Migrations involved the transfer of people, languages, cultures, technologies, plants,
animals and diseases. Different disciplines combine forces to get a more robust account of
prehistory in Asia and Oceania.

La ricostruzione della preistoria attraverso genetica, linguistica e archeologia ha permesso
di approfondire ulteriormente la conoscenza degli spostamenti delle popolazioni umane

comportato il trasferimento di persone, linguaggi, culture, tecnologie, piante, animali e
malattie. Molteplici discipline uniscono le loro forze per ottenere una visione più efficace della
preistoria in Asia e Oceania.
Early Events in Virus Infection
The medical, societal, humanitarian and economic impact of viral disease around the world
is devastating. This conference will address the interaction between viruses and their host
cells, an important and rapidly growing area in virus research. Topics will be in virus-host
interference, virus structural biology, screening and bioinformatics technologies, cell biology
of viral entry, and the impact of infection on cellular organelles and functions.

L’impatto umanitario, sociale ed economico causato da malattie virali nel mondo è devastante.
Questa conferenza tratterà l’interazione tra virus e cellule ospite, un campo importante e
in rapida espansione della ricerca antivirale. I temi discussi saranno biologia cellulare delle
infezioni, difese antivirali, biologia strutturale dei virus e tecnologie di ricerca bioinformatiche
e di screening.
Towards a molecular-level understanding of atmospheric aerosols
Atmospheric aerosol particles have an influential role in the atmospheric processes that
affect the climate on Earth. To deepen our insight into these processes a more fundamental
understanding is required. This conference will bring together senior and junior scientists
to discuss atmospheric aerosol particles on the basis of molecular-level experimental and
modelling studies.

Hand, Brain and Technology
The tight functional coupling between hand and brain has greatly shaped the evolution of
language, culture and technology. This conference will bring together leading researchers
from the multiple disciplines studying the unique dexterity and sensory abilities of the
hand, its neuromechanical and physiological control, as well as its functional recovery and
neuroprosthetic restoration following injury.

del linguaggio, della cultura e della tecnologia. La conferenza si prefigge di riunire ricercatori
leader nelle molteplici discipline che studiano l’unicità della competenza motoria e delle
abilità percettive della mano, il loro controllo fisiologico e neurofunzionale, come pure il loro
recupero e ripristino neuro-protesico postlesionale.
Cold and Controlled Molecules
The meeting brings together leading experimental and theoretical scientists from the field of
cold and controlled molecules and ions. The complete control of the motion and orientation
of neutral and charged gas-phase particles in three dimensions is now possible. Applications
lie in very different fields, including low-temperature molecular scattering and chemistry,
quantum information, or solid-state physics.

All roads take to the brain: neural control of human energy homeostasis in health and disease
In health, the brain maintains energy homeostasis by controlling food intake and organ activity.
In disease, the brain modulates these reciprocal interactions to overcome the insult, which may
lead to perturbations that can be deleterious. This conference will advance our understanding
of these mechanisms by focusing on the interactions among the various peripheral signals,
their neurochemical integration and the brain-initiated responses.

Challenges of the world-wide experimental search for the electric dipole moment of the
neutron
Searches for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron are among the
highest priority experiments of low energy particle physics. A finite EDM violates time reversal
symmetry (while a magnetic dipole does not) and goes beyond the Standard Model of Particle
Physics. The workshop focuses on vital issues of the experimental approaches and brings
together the leading experts in the field and students from all efforts world-wide.
