Toxic Gas, Oxygen, Heat Sensors – Analog Front End
The Sensors
• Combustible Gas Sensors – 3 node
Amperometric sensor – Examples: CO,
H2, H2S
− Working electrode (also called the
sensing electrode) is designed to
optimize the oxidation or reduction
of the toxic gas to be measured.
ISL28194/5
ISL28194/5
− Reference electrode anchors the
working electrode potential.
ISL28194/5
− Counter electrode (EA ) balances
the reaction of the working
electrode. If the working electrode
oxidizes the gas, then the counter
electrode must reduce some other
molecule to generate an equivalent
current.
ISL28194/5
• Oxygen Sensor – Current output
EL8170/72
• Heat Bead – Bridge type voltage output
Analog Front End Requirements
• Low Power Op Amps, Low Bias Current
− ISL28194/5 Transimpedance amp for the gas and oxygen sensor, a buffer/driver for the gas sensor, gain amps stages
• Low Power Instrumentation Amps
− EL8170/72 high gain, high CMRR of heat bead sensor

Power : Focus on low Iq and high efficiency parts
ISL9021: Wide Vin low Iq single LDO
ISL9103/4: Low Iq high efficiency switching regulator
In high end models, USB regulation and protection IC can be promoted:
ISL80121: 1A ultra low drop out LDO with fixed 5V output
Power source can be a stack of alkaline, NiCad batteries, or a Li-ion battery,
or even a USB supply. Basically input can be anywhere from 1.8V to 6V.
Small power loss is the key as devices need to run for long hours.
6
ISL9021: Single Low VIN, High PSRR 250mA LDO

Q: What kind of charging circuit is needed for your device?
ISL2800X Design Example: 20A Max Current; 10V FS Output; G = 100
•
Given these:
• Full scale sense current (ISENSE FS) = 20A
• Full scale output voltage (VOUT FS) = 10V
• Current sense amplifier gain (G = 100)
•
All that is needed is RSENSE to complete the design:
• Calculate full scale input voltage (VSENSE FS) = VOUT FS/ Gain = 10V/100 = 0.1V
• Calculate RSENSE = VSENSE FS/ ISENSE FS = 0.1V/ 20A = 5mΩ

with iPath management
14
ISL9230: Charger IC with iPath
Description
• Full iPath™ management, provides power
to the system while simultaneously
charging the battery with up to 1.5A.
Features
• 40mΩ internal iPath™ FET reduces loss
when battery is supplying bus.
• Autonomous charging and system current
control simplifies design effort.
• 26V Max VIN with built in OVP at 6.6V to
protect battery and system circuits.
• Intelligent timeout interval based on
charge current prevents premature
timeout when system is operational.
• Programmable input current limit
prevents the source from collapsing
during system high current operations.
15
ISL9230: iPath Management
• How does it work?
• At given current limit, control
core continuously monitors the
output voltage. Actions are
based on three conditions:
Input
AC
IREF
VBAT
Q1
IMIN
Q2
TIME
GND
– VOUT holds steady, meaning
available current is adequate
• Deliver needed current to both paths
– VOUT starts to drop, meaning
available current is not adequate
• Reduce ICHG until VOUT stops dropping
– VOUT continues to drop to below VBAT
level, meaning available current is
far below demand
• The battery starts providing current to
the load instead of charging.
