Photo Etiquette - Coastal Carolina Camera Club

PHOTOGRAPHY ETIQUETTE
Presented by

• Photography is all about taking pictures isn't it?
• Actually, photography can be just as much about how you
behave as the images you take. If you are rude or cause
problems at an event you can lose your opportunity to
take images there ever again, if you aren't thrown out
immediately.
• Photography is much like a choose your own adventure
book. Each choice you are presented with leads to a
variety of other situations.
• A large part of photography is knowing what choices to
make in each situation. For example, using a flash might
be expected at graduations but what about at a public
circus performance? At a circus, flash is usually
discouraged (although many people ignore the request)
because it can be dangerous for performers.
• While most flashes are not powerful enough to be
advantageous for the photograph from such a distance,
they are powerful enough to cause spots in the
performers' eyes. This can cause real problems for
tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, and other high-risk
performers.
•
How do you know what good etiquette is for different
occasions?
• Ask someone who has experience in taking those types
of photographs or ask someone in charge of the event.
• There are some good general rules to go by that you can
apply in almost any situation.
RULES
1. Do not block someone else's view of the
event
2. Never be rude
3. Do not put yourself or anyone else in danger
by your actions
4. Do not expect special treatment (it is wonderful to get
backstage access but it is not a right)
5. When in doubt if something is OK --
ASK
There are also some specifics for certain
events that are good to remember in
addition to the general rules.
Night Photography
1. Wear bright clothing so that motorists
can easily see you.
2. Take a buddy with you for safety.
3. Always yield to pedestrians and traffic.
Sports Photography
1. Be willing to sign a waiver of liability if you
want near the action.
2. Pay attention to where the ball is (unless you
like getting hit in the head with a ball).
3. Pay attention to where the players are
(remember those news clips of photographers
being run over by football players)
Sports Photography - continued
4. Do not get in the way of the players or
officials.
5. Request permission ahead of time
(usually not required for high school
games).
Wedding Photography
1. Ask ahead of time for permission.
2. Do not get in the way of the professional
photographer (the couple is paying a lot for those
images - help them be good ones).
Posting Photos in FaceBook, etc.
Has anyone ever posted a photo of you that wasn’t exactly
flattering?
Maybe you got caught with a strange expression on your face.
Or you wore a shirt that might have looked great at the store, but
never should have made it to your closet?
Or maybe you just had a bad hair day (think Donald Trump in a
wind storm).
This has happened to me. So, I am hoping to
pioneer a new photo posting etiquette rule:
Stop and consider the other people
in the photo before you post their
photos.
You might look like a supermodel, but I might look
like the Demon Barber of Seville, or Alfalfa from the
Little Rascals.
Upload the photo if you must, but please, post and
tag wisely.
PHOTOGRAPHING THE EXTERIOR OF
FEDERAL BUILDINGS
Homeland Security has issued strict guidelines for law
enforcement about photographers who are taking photos of
federal buildings:
1. Individuals are allowed to photograph the exterior of federally
owned or leased facilities from publicly accessible spaces,
such as streets, sidewalks, parks and plazas.
2. If approached by a law enforcement officer, identify yourself
and conduct yourself in a professional and polite manner.
3.
Be professional about the way you take
photographs: do not block sidewalks or other
paths with tripods or camera equipment.
4.
Do not impede law enforcement operations or
ingress/egress of people or vehicles
entering/exiting the facility.
5.
Do not distract law enforcement personnel by
engaging them in assisting your efforts.
Law enforcement is not allowed to ask you to erase contents of
a camera, or search your photography equipment. They are
only allowed to ascertain the identity of the individual.
The regulation specifies that individuals must obtain permission
BEFORE photographing the interior building entrances,
lobbies, foyers, corridors or auditoriums.
The permission to do such photographing must be obtain in
advance and in writing, so that the photographer may present
such authorization if ask for.
ABOVE ALL, BE EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL
WHILE IN CONTACT WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT
PERSONNEL.
Again, when in doubt or new to a particular
situation of photography please ask someone for
advice.
Playing by the rules will make the experience
much better for everyone involved.
