Why is delta technology potentially a growing market
• 50 % of the world population lives
in coastal, delta’s and river areas
• This number is expected to
increase
• Sea level rise increases flood risk
and hampers the fresh water
supply (last estimate : 3m????)
• Many Delta’s are subsiding
(several m / century)
Many urban areas under-protected against
floods

Seem to manage their own delta quite reasonable
Leaving 60% of The Netherlands with a
completely regulated water management
system

Hard structures on muddy beds become easily unstable:
Mangrove replantation. Success rates of 5 – 10 %.

Challenging topics for today
• Water and sustainability
• Urban development
• IT in Deltatechnology and planning
What I learned last week:
The innovation is not the technology,
it is what people do with it.
