Support for the Households Affected by
Flood and Water logging in Bangladesh
1
Project Background
Heavy rainfall in August 2011 combined with poor maintenance of
drainage system and river protection embankment, siltation of major
rivers and intrusion of water from West Bengal, India caused flooding
in 13 districts in Bangladesh. Satkhira district is categorised as badly
affected by flood in respect to affected households (HHs) numbers,
damage and loss of houses, crops, sanitation and communication.
As per the Joint Need Assessment report, in the assessed areas (41
unions of Jessore and Sathkhira district), a total of 72,284 families were
affected in the sectors of food security, livelihood, water & sanitation,
shelter and education.
Following the JNA, Save the Children applied for the 2nd phase support
