necessary for both scotopic (night vision) and color
vision


scurvy
Coumarins
 blood
thinners used in the treatment blood clots and


Beta-carotene may have benefits of cancer
prevention
Scurvy if Untreated
Patient develops pain in the extremities,
gingivitis, and ulcerations on the skin.
 Eventually the skin becomes fragile and
starts bleeding, teeth fall out, and arteries
and veins burst.

Squash
Became the favorite food of the
Sahabah(R)
 Not because of medical benefit
 Because of their love of the Prophet
Muhammad (SAW)
 What is our favorite food?

Favorite Sweet
Your favorite sweet?
 The Prophet (SAW) liked to eat sweets,
especially honey.

Hadith -- Benefits of honey

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:
“Honey is a remedy for every illness and
the Qur'an is a remedy for all illness of the
mind, therefore I recommend to you both
remedies, the Qur'an and honey.”
Ayats about honey/bees

The Qur’an says, “Bees were inspired through
inborn advice by the Rabb, instructing: ‘Make
hives in mountains, in trees and in that which
they (humans) build. Then eat of all the fruits
and follow the ways of your Rabb submissively.
There comes out from within (their bodies) a
drink of various hues (honey), in it is healing
(effect) for humans. Verily in this is a sign for the
people who consider it.’”
(Surah 16, Ayats 68-69)
Honey
If you have allergies, eating honey can be
beneficial
 Moisturizer for dry skin
 Sore throat = anti-inflammatory
 Cough – better than Robitussin
 Antiseptic to prevent infection of wounds
 Upset stomach/diarrhea

How bees make honey

Worker bee sucks nectar from flowers, it is
stored in a special honey stomach which it
uses as a "nectar backpack". This is
completely separate from the digestive
stomach.
How bees make honey
Bee returning to the hive with a load of
nectar is almost immediately greeted by
other worker “house bees” ready to relieve
it of the load.
 The bee vomits the nectar into the mouth
of the other “house bee”.

How bees make honey

These "house bees" "chew" the nectar for
about half an hour. During this time,
enzymes are breaking the complex sugars
in the nectar into simple sugars so that it is
both more digestible for the bees and less
likely to be attacked by bacteria while it is
stored within the hive.
How bees make honey

The bees vomit the processed nectar and
spread it throughout the hive where it
becomes honey.
Squash and Honey
Squash and honey -- Love these foods not
because science says they have health
benefits
 Favorite foods because we want to follow
the Sunnah of Prophet (SAW)
 Can we make squash and honey our
favorite foods?

Other Fruits
Which 5 are mentioned in the Quran?
 Figs, olives, grapes, pomegranate and
dates

Surah Al-An’am, Ayat 99

“And (We produce) gardens of grapevines
and olives and pomegranates, similar yet
varied. Look at (each of) its fruit when it
yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that
are signs for a people who believe.”
Figs and Olives
Surah Teen
 “By the Fig and the Olive”

Hadith – Figs

“Eat figs! If I would say a certain type of
fruit was sent down to us from the
heavens I would say it’s a fig because it
has no seeds. It cures hemorrhoids and is
useful for rheumatism.” (arthritis and gout)
Figs
Figs are a top source of fiber, as well as
potassium and vitamin B6.
 Just one fig provides 20% of the USRDA
of fiber.

Figs
Fiber results in bulkier stools, which lessen
the incidence of constipation, hemorrhoids
and colon cancer.
 Fiber also lowers cholesterol and the risk
of heart disease.

Hadith – Olives

“Eat the olive oil and apply it (locally),
since there is cure for seventy diseases in
it, one of them is Leprosy.”
Olives
Olive oil plays an important role in the
prevention of heart disease and
cardiovascular accidents.
 The fatty acids and antioxidants found in
olive oil help to maintain healthy
cholesterol levels and protect the arteries.

Olives
Olive oil also contains a natural chemical,
called oleocanthal, which acts as a
painkiller.
 A recent study found that oleocanthal
inhibits the enzyme activity in inflammation
in the same way that drugs like Ibuprofen
do. (good for muscle strain and joint
sprain)

Olives
Olive oil is rich in fatty acids and
antioxidants which nourish, hydrate and
protect the skin, nails, and hair.
 Cradle cap treatment

Hadith – Pomegranate

“There is not a pomegranate which does
not have a seed from one of the
pomegranates of the Garden of Jannah in
it."
Pomegranate
Helps prevent various forms of cancer
 Lowers blood pressure
 Lowers cholesterol
 Helps treat arthritis

Food We Eat
Think about why we eat it
 Is it mentioned in the Quran?
 Is it mentioned in the Hadith?
 Can get easy reward for changing our
intention
