Measles, Mumps, Rubella
All students need to prove having received two
measles, one mumps & one rubella vaccination
(or provide lab work demonstrating immunity)
Any student not compliant with this law within
30 days of arrival on campus will be removed
from residence and classes.

Meningitis Vaccination
Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccine is not
required, it is recommended.
Rare but potentially deadly disease.
High risk group is college students
(especially freshman)

Tuberculosis (TB)
Very common
Worldwide 1 of 3 people are infected!!
Exists in two forms,
- Active TB
Sick with fevers, cough, weight loss
nightsweats. Chest x-ray abnormal
- Latent (Dormant) TB Infection (LTBI)
No symptoms
10% chance of developing into Active
TB (cont)
Many Students from outside the U.S.A.
have been exposed to TB.
Most of these students are not sick.
Many have Latent TB Infection (LTBI) and
are at risk for developing active TB at
some time in the future.
Treatment of LTBI can prevent the onset
of active TB.
Testing for TB
TB Skin Test (TST)
Can be inaccurate
QuanteFERON Blood Test
Very accurate
This is the preferred test at UAlbany
UAlbany Policy
All students from TB endemic countries
without a QuanteFERON Serum test done
within 6 months of arrival in the U.S. must
have testing done here in Albany.
The cost billed to your student account
will be $57.50.

TB QuanteFERON Blood tests from outside the
USA are accepted.
Though we can retest you if you prefer.
Chest X-ray reports on students with positive
TB tests must be done within the 6 months prior
to arrival on campus at a facility within the USA.
Who may not need a TB Test?
Students from areas of low TB Incidence (incomplete list)
AMERICAN REGION
USA, Canada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint
Lucia, Virgin Islands.
EUROPEAN
Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein,

WESTERN PACIFIC:

Need to complete a simple questionnaire
evaluating them for other TB risk factors.
Positive TB QuanteFERON Test
Two possibilities
A) Active TB
Sick
Abnormal Chest X-ray
B) Latent TB Infection (LTBI)
Not sick
Normal Chest X-ray
What Will Happen Today
Blood sample will be taken today or at another
scheduled time.
You will be notified of positive results (indicating
TB infection) by e-mail.
– Those found to be positive will meet with a Medical
provider at the health center for a chest x-ray and
discussion of treatment options.
Those with negative test results require no
further action.

LTBI Treatment
9 months of one pill a day
Available at no cost at the Albany County
Department of Health
Initial visit , visits every 3 months, phone calls
every month.
Lowers risk of developing active TB from 10% to
<1%.
Not required by UAlbany but is strongly
recommended.
Students who decline treatment for
Latent TB Infection:
Are allowed to remain on campus,
Must sign a release acknowledging their
condition.
Will be removed from campus If they
develop active TB.
H1N1 Flu Virus
Novel (new) Influenza Virus (previously known
as “swine flu”)
Few Facts:
- 25 y/o and younger affected more than any
age group
-80% of those hospitalized < 50 (median age

-1/4 who have died—no significant
underlying Illness
- Vaccine—under development
Why Be Concerned?
Without the exposure experienced while in
the country of origin,
immunity is lost

Camphylobacter, Salmonella (Typhoid

BCG
Vaccination for Tuberculosis (TB)
Only 50-60% effective
Will only possibly cause a positive PPD (TB
Skin test) for 3-5 years after it is given. After 5
years the BCG has no effect on PPD.
A PPD over 14 mm is NEVER due to a BCG
In general BCG does not change
how we interpret a PPD (TB Skin
test).
Who needs a TB Test?
Students from areas with a high prevalence of
TB
All countries in these regions:
* Africa
*Eastern Mediterranean
*Southeast Asian
*Some European Countries
Students with known Positive PPD:
Must complete a TB symptom
questionnaire
Must provide a copy of a chest x-ray report
done within the 6 months prior to arrival on
campus from a US facility.
Students without this chest x-ray will have
one ordered for them here. It is covered by
their International Health Insurance.
