MAKING A STRONG CLAIM
The claim is like the mini thesis statement
for your paragraph.
It takes a position on the question and
offers and answer.
Format: X leads to Y
EX: Chivers manipulates readers’ emotions
by using diction and parallel structure to
convey hi negative view of the US military.
ETHOS
 Ethos = Ethics
 How ethical is a given person, product, or idea?
 Related to credibility with a given audience
 The speaker must establish credibility by showing
that he or she has expertise in the subject and
that he or she is unbiased (i.e., the speaker does
not have an ulterior motive)
 When we believe that the speaker does not
intend to do us harm, we are more willing to
listen to what he or she has to say.
EXAMPLES
 When a trusted doctor gives you
advice, you may not understand all of
the medical reasoning behind the
advice, but you nonetheless follow the
directions because you believe that
the doctor knows what he or she is
talking about.
 Professional football players have
established their credibility in sports by
playing in the NFL. If LaDanian
Tomlinson tells us that Vizio is the best
television for watching the game, we
believe that he knows what he is
talking about.
 Is this good use of ethos?
