The Double Elimination
Tournament
Purpose: All contestants remain in
championship contention until they lose
two games
Advantages:
 A player or team must be beaten twice to
be eliminated
 It selects a more adequate winner
 It maintains player motivation right up
until the end
Disadvantages
 It takes longer to run
 It emphasizes elimination
Instructions
 Formula – min # of games: 2(N-1)
Max # of games: 2(N-1) + 1
 Construct a single elimination tournament with
appropriate # of slots
 Close the blocks of first round
 Complete the “losers side”
Note – every odd # round should have the same #
of slots as the previous round
 Criss cross losers so they don’t play the same
team again.

The most used form of tournaments for league
play
Three types:
Single round robin – play each team once
Multiple round robin – play each team more
then once (home and away)
Split round robin – used when you divide your
tournament into divisions. Play each team in
your division.
Advantages
 It selects a true winner
 It ranks all competitors
 It permits continuous play with maximum
use of facilities
Disadvantages
 It takes a longer time to complete
 More facilities are required
Formulas
# or Rounds – Even -> N-1
Odd -> N
# of Matches
M= N (n-1)/2

Instructions
 assign a number to each participant or team
 List the team number without the team name
 A team is assigned the Robin ( team that does
not rotate)
 Teams in tournament will rotate counter
clockwise around the robin
 If there is an odd # of teams, a bye is inserted
in the “robin” position
