Run-on Sentences
There are four ways
to fix a run-on!
Here you go…
What does a run-on sentence look like?
Example: My pug loves treats, she begs for them.
When you place a comma between two independent clauses
(My pugs loves treats, she begs for them), you have created what
is called a COMMA SPLICE.
Rather than bringing the two clauses together, a comma
separates them. Instead, USE ONE OF THE FOUR FIXES!
What does a run-on sentence look like?
Example: My pug loves treats she begs for them.
When you have two independent clauses without any
punctuation between them (My pug loves treats she begs for
them), you have created a run-on sentence.
Instead, USE ONE OF THE FOUR FIXES!
Fix #1
Make it two sentences by using a period
and a capital letter!
Run–on: My friend danced to the music
she was a great dancer!
Fix #1: My friend danced to the music.
She was a great dancer!
Fix #2
Add a comma and a coordinating
conjunction (FANBOYS)
to make a compound sentence.
Run-on: My friend was a great musician
he could play the drums well.
Fix #2: My friend was a great musician,
and he could play the drums well!
Fix #3
Place a semicolon between the two
independent clauses.
Run-on: The drummer played the music
it was amazing to hear.
Fix #3: The drummer played the music; it
was amazing to hear.
Fix #4
Add a subordinating conjunction to make
one dependent clause and one
independent clause.
Run-on: The music was great he had
spent hours practicing.
Fix #4: The music was great because he
had spent hours practicing.
