COMUNICATO STAMPA Catania 5 febbraio 2015 CONFERENCE: RURAL AREAS AS LANDSCAPE VALUE
26-27 March 2015, Catania, Italy
Life Leopoldia (LIFE11 NAT/IT/000232), in collaboration with AIIA (Italian Association of
Agricultural Engineering), host in Catania, Sicily, on 26 and 27 March 2015 a
conference entitled “Rural areas as landscape value”, to discuss on rural land quality
for supporting the development of local communities .
LIFE Leopoldia aims to re-establish and protect the sand dune habitats in the
greenhouse landscape of the Gela gulf, in the southern coast of Sicily, for the
safeguarding of Leopoldia gussonei, severely endangered by the extremely high
agricultural pressure.
This conference will be an opportunity to exchange best practices and reflect on
conservation, redevelopment and enhancement of rural areas as landscape value,
biodiversity reserve, driving force of local economies and source of identity for the
local population as understood by the European Landscape Convention.
LIFE Leopoldia proposes the landscape planning as a tool to review the past and
present activities, emphasize the interactions between natural and human systems
and structures to support future for the region compatible with the needs of nature
conservation, establishing boundaries between use and abuse of the land.
The field trip to the gulf of Gela will show the LIFE Leopoldia project actions to
decrease human pressure on dune habitas and increase low- impact agricultural
management systems.
The official conference languages are English and Italian.
