Habitation of Cheer Pheasant
• Cheer Pheasant occurs in the higher reaches and over a wide
altitudinal range from 1200m to 3000m.

Himalayan National Park Conservation Area

• Submergence level of Kol Dam Project is up to EL 642 m only.
Thus it is not likely to affect habitation of Cheer Pheasant.
Submergence of Trees
Findings of Joint survey conducted to explore possibility of
reducing trees & Wild Life Sanctuary land in submergence area,
based on decisions taken in 2nd Nov’10 meeting held in MOEF:
Reduction in No of trees Wildlife sanctuary
Dam height
saved
area reduced
By 1 M
450
1.92 ha.
By 2 M
899
3.81 ha.
By 3 M
1225
5.67 ha.
By 4 M
1659
7.51 ha.
Remarks
With reduction in Dam
Height, there is Nominal /
Negligible reduction in
trees & wildlife land on
account of submergence
• Since saving of trees & wild life land in submergence area on
account of reduction in Dam Height is negligible, State Forest
Deptt on 7th March’2012 has recommended levy of Rs 10.54 cr for
Wildlife mitigation measures in addition to other statutory levies.
Submissions & Approval Sought
• Construction of Koldam started in 2003 after taking all statutory
clearances.
• Issue of Majathal Wildlife land came up subsequently.
• No construction done by NTPC in the Majathal Wild Life area.
• Habitat of Cheer Pheasant is not affected by Koldam Submergence.
• NTPC has planted about 1.4 crore of trees through State Forest
Deptt. and is ready to plant more trees as per direction of State
forest department and NWBL .
• NTPC has invested Rs. 5400 Crores and almost all the activities of
the project have been completed.
• Impounding of the reservoir is scheduled to start in Sep/ Oct 2013.
Project is due to be commissioned during 2014.
