What Do Bivalves look like ?

• Clams are covered with shells

• Scallops shell consists of two equal pieces

• Mussels are water animals with soft bodies protected by hard shells

What are Bivalves Habitats?

• Mussels live under water

• Scallops also live under water because they are marine animals

• Clams live under water but they are found in the sand or mud

What does bivalves eat ?

How do they get there food?

• Scallops eat plankton

• a part of the scallop siphons bring water over where food becomes trapped in the mucus

• clams and mussels eat platonic food and filter fine

• since clams and mussels swim around water circulates through their shells they can bring it in and that is how they get their food

How do bivalves protect themselves?

• clams and mussels have 2 shells that open and close to protect themselves

• scallops by contracting the adductor muse

(that’s the part we eat) can expel water out of the body sending it back ward to get away from predators.

Three interesting things about Bivalves

• Clams and mussels are in a group called

“mollusks”

• Mollusks are known to be the first animals to develop gills

• Most scallops are filter feeders
