Background: NCHS’s Mission
The mission of the National Center
for Health Statistics (NCHS) is to
provide statistical information that
will guide actions and policies to improve the
health of the American people. As the
Nation's principal health statistics agency,
NCHS leads the way with accurate, relevant,
and timely data.
The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)
 Multi-purpose household health survey
 Conducted by NCHS, with data collection by U.S. Census Bureau
 In-person interview
 35,000-50,000 households annually
 Wide range of health topics
NHPIs in the NHIS
 ~100-150 NHPI households annually
 Small population, geographic concentration
 Traditional oversampling methods infeasible
Sample Frame for the NHPI NHIS
 The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS)
 The census long form
 3 million households annually
 New policy on using the ACS as a sampling frame for
federal surveys of rare populations
 Identifies about 8000 NHPI households
The NHPI NHIS
 Two waves of 4000 ACS addresses
 Survey instrument: 2014 NHIS
 Staff: Census Bureau interviewers and staff
