Notes:
As I was rinsing out an empty Diet Pepsi (my favorite cola) I noticed the label had a deposit value on it. I got thinking about earlier in
my life when a bottle of Pepsi cost ten cents for a ten ounce glass bottle from the machine at the corner store. You could take that
same bottle back to the store after it was empty and get a dime deposit back. Not a bad exchange. This got me thinking more about
what we place value on, and how we prioritize our lives. We tend to spend and extra thirty cents for every six pack of our favorite
beverage we buy and then we take the bottles back to the place of purchase to redeem our nickel per bottle. That simple term
“redeem” is a very important one. We get back something of value in exchange for something we no longer need. In a sense we are
taking what would have been garbage back to the store and getting money back for it. The value is the reason we take the time to
rinse out the bottles and cart them back to where they came from. If we saw them as having no value our attitude would surely
change. Would you return for something that was worthless? Would you take the time to clean it up to take it back if you thought it
had no value? Would you collect each one individually until you had amassed enough for the return trip? Your answer is most likely
“probably not”. Now consider your life and the value it holds not only to you but also to your creator.
When we were created we had a high value placed on us by God. Satan saw the way God esteemed us and got jealous. He had to do
something to keep us from the affection God was pouring out to us. In his cunning ways he was able to tempt the first woman and
deceive her, and through that deception her husband also. Check out the account in Genesis 3:1-6. When we exercised our free will
to sin against God He could no longer stand in our presence. The first act of sin separated all of us from God, but He wasn’t happy
about it because He valued us so highly. He came up with a plan to clean us up and redeem us from the curse put on all mankind due
to the original sin in the garden. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death
passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: The death here is not natural, but spiritual. It lasts forever. God came up with a plan to
purchase our life back from Satan. He sent His Son to receive our punishment and gave Him the power to withstand that punishment
for us even to death on a cross. Jesus didn’t stop by dying because He was given the power to take up His life again and to conquer
eternal death brought on by sin. Romans 5:19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of
one shall many be made righteous. God looked and saw our righteousness as a filthy rag so He gave us His righteousness to keep if
we would openly accept what Jesus did for us. He exchanged what was worthless to Himself (our self righteousness) for something
He valued greatly (His relationship with us). He did what no one else would or could do for you. He deserves our best.
As we race over the next few days consider what Jesus did for you and let His example be the model of how you conduct yourself
toward your fellow competitors. We have been given a great example of the right way to race in Hebrews 12:1-2 Wherefore seeing
we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily
beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for
the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. We
need to clear our minds of all the clutter that take our focus off of driving our best race. Worries, problems, attitudes, and offences
can all cloud our ability to keep our mind on driving. We also need to make sure our heart is right before God by confessing to Him
when we mess things up. He is quick to forgive us if we give Him the chance. The last part of Hebrews 12:1 tells us to run with
patience the race that is set before us. This is not a passive patience that stands still watching but an aggressive patience that
calculates when to move forward so that the move sticks. It is a type of patience that presses on when things look right but holds
back enough to not loose control. Hebrews 12:2 tells us that Jesus is the Author of our faith and is also the one that brings it to the
finish line of our life. We need to be looking to Him as we would our chassis builder, crew chief, and fuel guy all at once. He is all of
those things after all. He was there when we were created, He gives us knowledge and faith, and He gives us fuel to move ahead by
giving us His Holy Spirit. God wants you to be in His family. He sees you with loving eyes and you have a very high value in His eyes.
That is why He gave His only son as the price needed to redeem you. Have a safe weekend and stay under the spout the blessings
come out. Be sure to join me Sunday morning at the opening ceremonies for a short racer’s Chapel Service in the infield.
