How is Year 2 different
to Year 1?

• More emphasis on independence and
taking more responsibility for own
learning
The Creative Curriculum
 We have made our curriculum exciting and cross-curricular.
 Literacy lessons usually teach the core skills through other
topics.
 Our topics are:
 The Enchanted Forest, Rugby, Heroes and Villains, Poles
Apart, Lighthouse Rescue, Things That Go Bump in the Night
and Disasters.
 Numeracy is taught using the National Curriculum and we try
to link maths investigations to our topics where possible.
 We are also using some exciting texts to explore some
aspects of numeracy for examples 365 Penguins!
Reading
•
More emphasis on the teaching of Guided reading - twice a week.
Guided reading is taught in a small group of around 6 and is a
teaching session to work on reading skills and comprehension. It is
a good time for children to discus what they are reading. The
following day the children complete a follow up activity.
•
Individual reading every other week
•
Over 2 weeks children read 5 times
•
Following moderation meetings with Local Authority Advisors, the
emphasis is on reading comprehension and inference.
Children need to thoroughly understand what they are reading
What do you know?
What can you infer?
Phonics
 The children have phonics lessons every day.
 We follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ document and
the children in Year 2 work through ‘phase’ 6.
 Small group ‘top up’ sessions are held in the
afternoons to help provide additional support for
children who need a recap of ‘phase’ 5 work.
 Children who scored below 32 on their phonics
test in year 1 will take the test again in year 2
 Spelling strategies will be taught as part of
phonics, there will not be a spelling test
Writing
• Planning writing around the topic and other areas of the
curriculum
• Planned from National Curriculum and The National Literacy
Framework
• Children will be learning how to join their handwriting after
Christmas
• Start by embedding the basic skills.
• Use interesting vocabulary in writing
• Writing through a range of genres
Ability Groups
 During Literacy and Maths the children will be
grouped according to ability within the class.
 Within these groups the children will be set work
appropriate to their ability level. Sometimes this
will be independent work and sometimes the work
will be supported by a Teacher or Teaching
Assistant.
 This enables all children to have their needs best
met.
 There will be opportunities for the children to
work in mixed ability groups when appropriate.

year.
Children may change groups during the
Feedback
The children’s progress will be discussed
with them at regular intervals through
marking and verbal feedback.
During lessons, the children will be given
time to act on the feedback that they
have been given. This means that they will
know how to improve their own work.
Homework
 Homework books should be returned to school each Monday
and will be sent back during the week
 Children are able to choose their own homework each week
from a set list but the 4 highlighted in red must be
completed throughout the term
 A range of subjects and key skills are covered
 Children are given the opportunity to change their reading
books once a week provided they have read them at home
and someone has written in the reading diary.
S.A.Ts
 We have to carry out the national tests and
teacher assessment at the end of Year 2.
 S.A.T. s are NOT stressful and our children
usually enjoy them!!!
 Depending on the level your child is working at,
they may take tests, tasks or a combination of
the two.
Taking Care
• We complete the Warwickshire Taking Care Program in year
2, following on from other year groups
• Appropriate names for parts of the body
• Network of people you can talk to
• Early warning signs
• Safe and unsafe secrets
• Public and private behaviours
Building Learning Power –
Becoming more independent learners
• The 4 R’s:
• Reciprocity – skills to work alone and with other people
• Resilience – keeping going when it gets tricky
• Reflectiveness – thinking about how you learn
• Resourcefulness - Making good use of the resources around
them
Our Reward System
 Celebration assembly – star of the week, 3 children at
random to choose a piece of work they are proud of
 Stickers may be used to mark particularly good examples of
the children’s work or for particularly good behaviour.
 Inappropriate behaviour will be discouraged by the use of
thinking time during break. If inappropriate behaviour
persists the child may be sent to the head.
Transition to Junior School
• Transition work begins in June.
• Year 3 send the children each a ‘buddy letter’
• The children visit the Junior School with the year 2 staff
to carry out tasks and activities with the year 3s.
• County transfer day
